I arrived in Martigny mid-afternoon after a fairly straightforward 4.5 hour stroll from Saint-Marice, where I spent a lovely evening with the Augustian community at their abbey in the town. Its claim to fame is that it is the oldest continuously functioning abbey in the western world, having been founded in 515AD. ... to mark my arrival. "Pas de problem", I said to myself, as I had a good distance to cover to get to the town of Orbe for my first night en Suisse.
