... army to various victories against the Turkish empire. <br>On the road from the bus station (stop) there is a street of wooden shops (that ironically looks very turkish and was selling predominantly turkish goods!).

Tirana, Albania schwate... coast. Night-riding is great for saving some bucks, but not good for sightseeing. For better or worse you usually have no choice over the matter, and in these parts where the riders are mostly locals, migrant workers at that, night buses are typical, fine if they arrive in daylight, not 3am, even better if they arrive at a station full of shops and coffee, not merely a streetside drop spot. Tirana has no such luxuries. It's better than Bamako no ...
Tirana, Albania hardiek... in a nearby café as I waited. I then had a bit of a revelation, well, as much as you can have about beer. Surely the fact they were drinking beer and it was a reasonable price was enough?. Beer drinking was definitely alive and well in Albania, even if it tended to be foreign beer they were drinking. I'd seen no end of places to drink beer- just not the beer I wanted. Was I being selfish and narrow minded? Yes, yes I probably was, but **** it- Tirana beer is horrible.
Tirana, Albania englishanddrunk... he had ever seen a map before. He had no English but thankfully he was able to recognise my pronunciation of the street where the hostel was and with that he grabbed me by the arm and without saying a word dropped me right outside the door. It was such a surreal experience yet it was one of the warmest acts of kindness from anyone I've encountered since I left Galway. All I could do was bow my head in thanks and give him one of my biggest smiles, and with that he was gone. Getting ...
Tirana, Albania talamarko... a sidewalk. Most of the times these dogs don't hang out together, however sometimes they'll travel in packs. At night however, it's a different story. The dogs start travelling in packs more, more barking can be heard and you don't want to come up behind a dog in a dark and scare it.... a visit to a doctor to get a tetanus and rabies shot will then be necessary. Stefan and I (the animal lovers) have a hard time not adopting any of these street urchins yet, mainly ...
Tirana, Albania kirstentravels... roads going between them; in their hastiness infrastructure was completely ignored, no thoughts of electricity or water connections or where they might put their car when their house is 60m to the nearest road. In the center of the city apartments built during communism remain. They look old and tatty from the outside but inside they are modernly decorated and would make most people in England jealous. A huge step forward from during communism when the couple had ...
Tirana, Albania baileyandkerry... few things occurred that made this the worst bus ride I have ever taken. First, the bus driver blared techno and rock music (which wouldn't stop for the entire trip and couldn't be drowned out by earplugs, ipods or anything Tammy and I tried. Then, about an hour into the trip, a couple with a baby started thinking that the air pressure difference of the wind rushing by the open air vent behind them would be harmful to their child. So ...
Tirana, Albania alexk1018... cross with conventional transport that supressing the people was impossible. Armies move very slowly up densely forested mountains. We came into Albania well after dark. Drat! the ride to Tirana was more than four hours for the few hundred kilometers distance. It is so annoying when this happens because orienting oneself in the dark and in an usual city is not always easy. I had the LP out and I was trying to read it in the dark, during the ...
