... the castle, where I stop for coffee. It's very steep and my legs are feeling it. I carry on and eventually come out at tiny little lakeside town. It's a beautiful (though a bit difficult) walk with magnificent views of the lake from up high. More photos. Back down lakeside, I head back towards Varenna. I stop at Hotel Villa Cipressi for late lunch. Spaghetti with duck ragu and porcini mushrooms. ...

It was time to batten down the hatches for the night. An even worse thunderstorm then took over the battering and on bolt of lightning shook our residence on it's steadies and almost deafened us. This was the night from Hell!

Day 290 5 hrs, 6.1 kms Today my Alps Superhike will come to an end--for now. I've now created a trail of footprints connecting Varese, Italy with Mals, Italy traversing Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria... more than 1,000 kilometers of walking (so technically it's now a "Megahike"). And what are my thoughts? I want more! I'm already scheming of how I might stretch out this hike all the way from France to Slovenia, doing a couple of big loops through Switzerland so I ...
