Layed Back

Another beautiful day. Sunny 78 degrees on the island of Rhodes. We travel to Lindos half way down the island. To see the Acropolis were Paul spoke to the Greeks. A long climb to the top with a view to forever. Just outstanding. Back to the boat early to catch some sun by the pool.

I am going to upload a couple of pics from yesterday on Myconos to give you an idea of the beauty here.

Davo and Janet

Day trip to Rodos

There's Medieval castles in Greece? Who knew! We stopped in Rhodes enroute from Fethiye to Santorini, and got to enjoy the day in Rhodes town before catching the overnight ferry out. Coming into the port, there's a great view of their old castle, and we spent a lot of the day inside the "old town", exploring the Knight's Quarter, along with all the tourist shops.
After ...

Just beautiful

What a difference a day makes. This place is absolutely beautiful. There are still lots of walls and castles that have been here for thousands of years, but it is nice and clean and friendly. We walked into the walled city and saw heaps more shops with locally made things and also lots of touristy rubbish, but no-one was hassling us to buy and we could just wander around looking and not fighting people off ...

A nice little break on a long journey.

... a magnificent bronze statue of Helios, a Greek God. It was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. The statue only stood for 56 years before an earthquake destroyed it in 226BC.

The medieval town of Rhodes has now been declared a world heritage site. And no wonder with its winding old lanes, ancient defensive walls and its beautiful clear sky and water. We couldn't have afforded a night here but we sure are glad we got to spend a day in this touristy little town.
<br ...

Rhodes

... that goes the full distance. Wonderful but very hot. Then inside town again to sample the shops. More than we could or did want to count. Shopkeepers much more relaxed in their approach. A pleasant change after the in your face approach in Turkey. Yes a couple of small purchases made. Tonic for Di's stateroom gin and water for Leo's whiskey. Quarter the price of on board.

Rhodos Town

... its more expensive and the food isn't as good. However, our hotel and our room are great - nothing fancy but very comfortable, and definitely in a great location - right in the old town, but just far enough away from the hugely touristy bits to be quiet. And Old Town Rhodes is nothing if not touristy. Its yet another stop for the cruise ships, plus the island attracts masses of Europeans (esp Brits and Germans) on cheap package holidays - mainly for the sun and beaches, but ...

Visiting the home of the Knights

... head west, the wall blocked us as there were no gates, so we headed to the south gate and walked around the walls from outside. Then we headed west up the hill to a great viewpoint at the top where the radio towers are located. There was a fine panorama with the brilliant blue ocean, and out beyond the coast of Turkey was visible. We headed back down to the old town, this time going through the north gate ...

Grecian Splendour

... first. The gelato came first). Day 1 (Embarkation). The next morning the remaining three members of our upcoming voyage arrived-Mike, Andy, and Sara. They had taken a night train (everyone took a train but Evan and I) and apparently there were no seats so they sat in the narrow hallway and had to move every 5 minutes...sounded like the train ride from hell and I'm very glad I didn't have to deal with that. We all went to the ship embarkation port place and after waiting about 45 ...

Goodbye Europe

... occupation of Rhodes was a dark period, as it was for the whole of Greece...... the Turks never managed to make much capital of their occupation and the Greeks still managed to flourish".

Actually, reading this guidebook makes for some good entertainment. The first sentence starts somewhat pompously "Rhodes is the meeting point for Europe, Africa and Asia". That's funny, I thought, I'd only seen European whites in the streets. In fact the only black people I have seen in ...
