Tallinn, Harjumaa, Estonia gsmhero... room (the sofa) and enough money to buy basic groceries, she is working full time at the hostel. She is from Lithuania and has been working there for 4 days. Over a drink she tells me a little bit about her life in Lithuania. She is in school getting a degree as a flutist. She has only had a few glasses of wine in her life because it is too expensive. Amazingly she knows about Myers Briggs so we discuss her relationships. Interesting how different the worlds are but how similar.
Tallinn, Estonia will.travellerOur day began with a gracious Estonia lady who shared not just her home town, but her personal life. We began our tour of the Lembit, one of the 2 submarines which the Republic of Estonia ordered from Great Britain before World War II. It was launched in 1936. We also saw Suur Toll a icebreaker. It was built in 1914. Alan had a blast touring these vessels. I watched his face light up like a child on Christmas day. He and a older man both are retired Navy so they both ...
Tallinn, Estonia deannac7... about two hours later with all her business done. She made some Skype calls back to the US and we started to get ready to leave for Tallinn by train. It couldn't have been any more convenient. We just walk across the street...didn't even have to walk through the train station. We got on the train. We were told that the first class car would ...
Tallinn, Estonia victorkubik... in the face of it, instead of starting with a strategic retreat in the direction of where I was staying, still in Lai, even if a bit less unconcerned, I went ahead with my sightseeing and headed down towards the St. Olav's Church. In its heyday, the St. Olav's used to be the tallest church in Medieval Europe. Its early days are a bit murky, but according to some sources a church may have been on this location as early as the 12th century. Some say the church was named after the ...
Tallinn, Estonia the_wayfarer... we had around 180 kms to drive from Turku back to Helsinki. (All told we drove 668 kms in Finland.) We left around 8 am from Turku, stopped to get petrol & then drove to Helsinki. We stopped at the Sibelius monument. That was frustrating because there were various tour groups who thought nothing of stepping in front of us while we tried to take a photo, or standing together as a group right in front of the monument - and of course they all had their own cameras to take ...
Tallinn, Estonia austega... century. They had restored some of the rooms, including the torture chamber, and you could climb up the watchtower. They had a stone-throwing machine and a fully functioning cannon, we got a picture of it going off. We were supposed to have a lunch there, but the place was swarming with wasps and bees so I passed - (I'm allergic and they kept getting in to the food). The town symbol was a bull, and they had a giant statue of a bull just outside of the ...
Tallinn, Estonia hagatha... for the sunset, well it wasn't fully set yet, it was only 10:30! But the photo's are wonderful. I wish you all could've been here to see it with us. Ah, off to bed, for tomorrow we arrive in Russia! RUSSIA! How exciting! I didn't think I would be as excited about it as I am. And Carol and Bob got me on their Ensemble tour in the morning! For Free! And I was able to drop the other tour, without a penalty! Now that's what I call a GREAT EVENING!
Tallinn, Estonia ohiolair... that is like the physical environment around. Bev and I gave up on anyone coming so we decided to have lunch ourselves and begin the wrap up here in Tartu and begin heading north to Tallinn and Finland. As we sit down to lunch about 1:30 pm there is a knock on the door. It's Helga! Last night she was virtually immobile. Now, she stands in front of our door with her cane and thanks God to be able to see us. She comes in inside and we carry on a joyful ...
Tallinn, Estonia victorkubikEstonia was both a delight and a disappointment. When we signed up for this excursion we chose "EZ Tallinn" because immediately following two full days in St. Petersburg we knew we would be tired and wanted to take it a little easy. Our guide was a delight. She clearly demonstrated for us the people of Estonia. She said it best by telling us Estonians love to sing. "Even our language sounds like a ...
