... and kinder and than the typical military cemetery with its endless rows of stark crosses.

We ended Tuesday at Rancourt, which is a French cemetery and Chapel of Remembrance for the French dead in the Battle of the Somme. The chapel was originally built by a local family, the Du Bos, to commemorate their son and his friends who died in the battle. 8,566 men are buried in the graveyard studded with lovely trees.

... we started. We are tied up in a small offshoot with some barges. Including one thats used as a night club. rae is planning to take a look later. I think i will pass. i havnt seen much of Valenciennes. Just sorted out vhf channels and stopping places (unsuccesfully. ) Rae is doing her bit for a more pleasant atmosphere on the boat. ... one ,mile long and surrounded by a canal. We made our way there and it took about 2 hours by car from Amsterdam. Our hotel..the Crown Plaza Bruges, is right in the center of the Burg square, the site of a 9th century castle and where you can view 6 centuries of different architecture. The hotel was nice, it actually contained 2double beds..a treat in my opinion! I am usually the one sleeping on the hump ...

We are seeing lots of houses that are subsiding dramatically as well as ones that have been left to decay, as well as the lovely ones of course. There is also an array of wooden sheds as holiday or even permanent accommodation along the canalside.
