We made a half day trip to Arles from Nimes by train.
Being a small village we were able to see most of what there was in the central part quite easily. There is the main arena, roughly the same size as the arena in Nimes, and also the Ampitheatre nearby, which is mostly ruins now.

I missed out on seeing the Gardens and the Castle as I arrived late and they'd already done it.

There are other smaller villages around to do day trips to/from, such as Avignon.
Marseilles and Montpelier are also 2-3 hours away by train.
We spent three very full days in Barcelona visiting all the major sites-the Sagrada Familia, Guelph Park, the Ramblas (major pedestrian walkway from the center city to the Mediterranean Sea), the Olympic Stadium and village built for the '92 Olympics and all the major neighborhoods occupied by its 1.6 million residents. It was quite a trek around the Fort - it wasn't all that tourisy and the routes around the fortification walls were not that clearly marked. Well - it added to the authenticity of the place. Until we reached the Masques tower.
The fort was also almost deserted. We climbed through the walls and into the chapels and towers used by guards and prisoners.
