More beer and brats

(S) Our last trip to Germany this go-round. Of course nothing is easy, which was proven when Chad took the sweet rental Yaris back to the airport and I was left at the Etap hotel. And was kicked out. Germans take the whole "check out time" a lot more seriously than our southern European friends. Packing and hauling both our packs out to the lobby in five minutes was a real treat. But, as always, our luck held out, Chad returned alive from the airport and we got on a train into town. We toured...

In the Land of Kings

Yes, yes, I know that the title of this entry is lame and corny. Everywhere in Europe is a "land of kings" but if you read on you'll see that this theme is particularly relevant to our time in Munich. Leaving Linz was a considerably more relaxed experience than arriving. Apart from the tram trip from the station, when we fare-evaded due to not having enough change, everything went exactly to plan. Breakfast was grabbed at the Hbf before we headed up to the platform and then found our seats on...

... After the colloseum we went and saw Palatine Hill which consisted of beautiful gardens with an amazing view of the rest of Rome. The next morning I went and was blessed by the Pope, and no Mom he didn't grow devil horns from being around me. This was utterly the most amazing experience of my trip. With the chorus in the background and just the atmosphere I had the most spiritual moment of my life. I really realized how lucky I am and that this whole trip has made ...

Oktoberfest Munchen Style

... if moms and dads just got tanked all day at Disney.

After walking around the park for a while taking it all in and getting used to being surrounded shoulder to shoulder with thousands and thousands of people who have been taking down liter after liter of beer all day we decide to hit up a beer tent to join in the festivities.

We first head into the Haufbrau tent and it is so jammed with people we can't find a seat (we would soon find out the ...

... a little traditional music. After our hour walk we decided we needed some lunch, all we had to chose from was the fancy resteraunt next to the closed beer garden. So that's where we ate (really good food by the way, and not that expensive either considering how the establishment looked- which was interesting to compare to how we looked after an hour long walk in the rain). And drank, Bernie managed a half litre of beer (not quite the same when ...

Munich Vacation

... rested in the jacuzzi, enjoying the jet streams on my aching feet. I drifted off to sleep easily this night. Day 4 Another wonderful breakfast, and I was ready for another day of adventure. Today, I decided to look at Germany's darker side and visit the legendary Dachau---Germany's first concentration camp. I took the Hauptbahnhof to ...

Oktoberfest

... get drunk for Oktoberfest, great! Anyway upon arrival we decided to try and stake claim to some seats inside the Hippodrome. We got inside and there were no seats left, despite having queued outside for a long time. Turns out people actually reserve their tables every year and enter through the back. But it turned out alright cause the sunshine was great and there is no better place to drink than out in the sun. Unfortunately ...

Of the Theresienwiese 'n Other Places to Fall Down

... We strolled a little way down and found several small beer gardens set up in and around the market. They were all packed and, once again, lots of traditional dress was on display. We squeezed into one of them and sidled up to the bar. I noticed a sign offering Sturm and explained it to Sean. They had both red and white and since I hadn't tried the white version yet, we went for that. It was a bit disappointing compared to the stuff I'd had in Austria, but the bartender was ...

Work will make you free....

... at least 3 times (NOT an option when you have a pack like mine!) and that the accommodation options there were nowhere near as cheap as what we have here in Munich. So we set off for the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial this morning...I was feeling determined to look through the whole thing, but I gotta admit that I was feeling *pretty* shaky just on the train and bus out there before we even arrived at the entrance! There´s nothing in the world that disturbs me ...

Oktoberfest

... up the street, following the Rick Steves' walking tour. We passed a cool city gate, lots of outdoor terraces, and tons of ornate buildings. At the end of the shopping street is the New Town Hall, built between 1867 and 1906. The New Town Hall has a clock, called the Glockenspiel, which is 100 years old and twice a day features a handful of moving characters that joust, telling the story of how the Bavarians beat their enemies. We continued walking around town for a bit and made our ...
