Loving the Louvre

I went to the Louvre today. What an experience. I was there for the 9:00 am opening and as soon as it opened I did a B-line straight for the Mona Lisa. I must have rushed passed 10 monumental art works including Winged Victory but I was going to beat the mobs. And I did. There were only about a dozen people in the Mona Lisa room and I was quickly able to go right up to the rope and snap all of my pictures and selfies. I felt like such a tourist. Up early this morning; got packed and checked out of our tour hotel. Walked the 5-6 blocks to our new hotel, where will will spend our remaining 5 nights in Paris. We left our suitcases, and marched off resolutely to find the train station to Versailles. We found the station, but it has no one to sell tickets. There is a machine--but it would not accept an American (chipless) credit card, and we found we did not have enough euro coins. So we headed down the closest ...

... and to this day is one of the most memorable things I have seen). P had wanted to see the catacombs so we booked a tour (rather than wait 4 hours in line). Something like 200 kilometres of underground tunnels that have been used for everything from mining for limestone, to nazi bunkers, to 19th century underground concerts. But probably what it is most famous for is its use as a grave. You see, as Paris graves became over crowded, one of the Louis' decided to mass ...
