Le weekend à Normandie et Bretagne

... steep to get down to the shore, it’s hard to imagine how difficult the soldiers had it. Seeing the sight at Omaha Beach really made me feel proud to be an American. After the beach, we drove onward to Saint-Malo, which is on the coast, and is a walled city. We stayed at a cute little hotel, similar to a B&B and had dinner at a nice restaurant, too bad I ordered my steak too rare…

1066 Tapestry

Next stop were we stepping back in time even further...to 1066 to be exact and the battle of Hastings which is deplicated on a 70 m piece of embroidded cloth known as the Bayeux taperstry. On entry to the tapestry you are given an audio guide which provides a running commentry on what is ...

Dinning at Maison du Scooby

Arrived at Ouistreham just before dark and found an Aire de Service right on the beach and this time it was free! The downside was it was right next to the ferry terminal and the 6am ferry to Portmouth the next day was kill the tranquilo the next morning. Kim's Maison du Scooby cooked up a storm. Pork fajitas on rice - delicious. I gave it 5 stars.

Honfleur - Noirmoutier - 405km

We started this morning planning to visit Honfleur and spend a couple of days here as it is so beautiful. But today it rains, so today it loses!
As the battery is flat too, we simply cast off and drove south west.
On the way out of Cite Europe where we took on some diesel we say a couple of hitchers, and as we were feeling in good spirits we picked them up.
They were quite chatty but after a while we were ...

GPS Woes

TomTom is great, expect when you don't have the maps for the country you're in!
We have the full european DVD but loading all the maps onto the phone was one item that did not make it onto my big list of jobs to do before we left.
I still have the DVD with my but no DVD drive!
We have been navigating with googlemaps since ...

Overnight in Honfleur

The first night was spent in a nice stop on the edge of the old port in Calais.
I've been here before when i did some sailing in my youth so i know it well.
It seemed safe enough as there must have been 50 motorhomes but there was a broken window overnight for someone!
We moved onto honfleur and found a nice stop 2Km from honfleur which was free and had a large football/basketball court for jake to play in

Omaha Beach, US Memorial, Arromanches, France

... being the 65th anniversary and I am sure lots of tourists were here we thought there might have been more signage, but I guess it is as it is. We did find the beach and went and walked along the sands. We could see bunkers up on the hill.

Then we went to the cemetery, first stop was the visitor centre that depicts the significance and meaning of Operation OVERLORD and honours the values and sacrifices of the World War II generation; a film and then ...

Travel day to Normandy

... I actually couldn't remember what it was but the name sounded farmiliar so i went for it. Its like a grilled ham and cheese sandwich but oh so much better. I had to eat it with a fork! The waiter was very nice there too. We didn't order anything to drink because we didn't want to pay for water so after asking us twice is we wanted something he just brought us over two glasses of water. He wasn't snobby about it at all. We must have looked thirsty ...

Omaha Beach

... s plenty to see. Unfortuantely the American Battlefield Monuments Commission has closed the artillery command post to the public and it is now fenced off. Arriving back at the hotel at low tide, I walked out on the beach to get a closer look at the 850-ton platform. You can see how big this thing is from the pictures. You can also get an idea of how far out the tide goes and how much ground the soldiers had to cover (running in full gear under enemy fire) before reaching safe cover.

... of congestion on the metro, go figure, the one night we actually have to be somewhere at a certain time and we can't make it on the first train because people are packed in there. But, luckily everything worked out and we caught the boat on time. The inside was really nice with a plate setting with more cutlery than either of us have ever seen before. It was a nice clear night and it wasn't too chilly out so we were both in good spirits. Our spirits ...
