Aware that two dorm beds often cost more than a private hotel room, Lyndi and I walked just left of the train station upon arrival in Florence and found Hotel Ester to be exactly what we were looking for. Taking up the second floor (or the "2th" Floor as they say...) it had a mini refrigerator, comfortable bed and even a little patio - plus a computer right in the room with free internet! All for 40 Euro! Highly recommended.

One of the things I wanted to do on this trip is to climb the Duomo in Florence. I must be crazy because it is 463 steps to the top but it was worth it - the views were amazing. The stairs started out like a normal staircase and then turned into a sharp spiral staircase. Thankfully there was a place to catch my breath - the first balcony in the …

And off we go again. To start the day my new tour leader, Andrea and his trainee leader, Illaria, led us on a four hour walk around Rome. The initial plan was to start at the Spanish Steps but there was a teachers' strike today and the teachers were marching through Rome to protest. When the metro was too crowded with teachers heading to their …

We began our visit to Florence with another one of our epic sleep-ins, after which we woke up to find our only planned event, a local wine tour, had been cancelled. We spent the morning researching new tours and booked one for the next day. Hungry, we set out for some epic lunch and finally found one in a touristy piazza (Sarah fell in love with scampis despite them watching her as she ate them...). After lunch we explored the local markets, went sight-seeing, stimulated ...

... a fancy boardwalk, and lots of beachfront bars, cafes and restaurants. As we made our way from town one to five, through all the olive groves, vinyards, and succulents, over hills and in between sprinkles, we had the trail almost entirely to ourselves. (Off season travel is THE way to go!) We enjoyed a picnic lunch somewhere between Corniglia and Vernazza. We stopped to explore each town and sample the local wine. We reached Monterosso with rosy cheeks and gusty winds. We ...
