Third Culture Shock

... explaining that the term referred to children who spent formative time outside their own countries, and merge aspects of their adopted and native cultures to form a third.

The term was coined in the 1960s by sociologist Ruth Hill Useem, after she lived for a time with her own three children in India and studied the affect on them and others. TCKs are children of missionaries, diplomats, army personnel and businesspeople, and any family who lives the expatriate life ...

There were computer labs linked to the Internet, chemistry and biology labs and a library overflowing with books and resources and student projects and artwork. There was a guidance counselor, a stern European woman, to help students with their university applications and ...

... and Valsa George. Aside from being dorm parents and having a spare room for visitors, they’d been teaching at Hebron for 22 years, and their daughter and her husband were both alumni. The Georges were dream hosts and used to guests in their pleasant little house. They pointed out everything I could possibly need or want, and wished me good night. I had an electric blanket and several thick fabric ones and went to bed with curtain calls and curriculum on my mind.
The long and winding road

... Reserve. Spectacular views teamed with no rain and warmer temperatures gave us a wonderfully relaxed few days. We took a morning safari into the reserve hoping to spot wild elephants, we returned having seen only spotted deer in the wild and captive, working elephants at the mahoot camp. We enjoyed fantastic food, cold beer and excellent service, almost forgetting we were only two hours away from chaotic Indian city life.

It was on ...

Tigers!!

... Janpal hypothesized that that was the elephant that the park management used to give rides on. All of us were sad that it was a short ride, because we thought we could have seen a lot more, had it been longer. Even though it was short, we did get to see some peacocks, monkeys, and some buffalo as well. On our way out, we saw a group of 5 elephants, and this time, we did get to stop to take pictures.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

... The second time we stopped the batteries on the camera went dead, that's life for you. I would certainly recommend this route as a bike ride and if you decide to take this road as part of a trip make sure the transport you are in will stop and let you look, it would be a crime to do this road without that option. We breakfasted in Conoor (the best masala dhosa so far) and decided that we wouldn't stay but continue onto Mettupalayam, a further ...

... be confusing to write baha'i's). They had, on their wall, a poster of the main principles of the baha'i faith, and I remember thinking 'well, how is that different to being a nice person in general?'. So I'm afraid I still don't understand exactly what the baha'i faith constitutes, but they make a bloody good mutton curry so I'll forgive them of their ambiguity. There are also a lot of 'home-made chocolate' vendors in Ooty. I have a sneaking suspicion they had melted ...

... over 9 hours, I think you get a medal for sitting through the whole piece. That pretty much wrapped up an entertaining (although painful in parts) day on Fort Cochin, and we caught the ferry back to Ernakulam, to get ready to head up to either Coimbatore or Mettupalayam the next day on the way to Ooty. We chose to get as far as we could in a day, so that we could catch the morning train up to Ooty at 7am. However, our 4 1/2 hour bus journey turned in to 6 hours ...

... how you can move from state to state and see such a huge difference in the people and the landscape...yet it's all one country. I went from Kochi in Kerala to Allepey, further south of the state. Kochi was very much an average town...though the Keralans seemed taller and calmer than the Goans. This is lungi-wearing country. Awesome! I found the Chinese fishing nets very atmospheric and they somehow really touched me. The Jewish synogogue was very ...
