Historical Traveler Reviews of Esplanade Hotel On The Seafront Bray

Fantastic Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Lovely hotel on the seafront fabulous location very relaxing.

This is my second time staying in this particular property and I must admit it was fantastic this time around impressive renovations really got it right. Very friendly staff clean comfortable bedrooms delicious food nothing to much trouble massive improvement all round. The new management are really after working hard to turn this into a first class hotel. Would recommend any one to stay here and im looking forward to returning in the summer months.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for one night in Sept 2005. We were extremely disappointed with a number of things. The Hotel is located on a wonderful site on Bray Seafront, BUT Management, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION.

1. There was a discrepancy between the quoted price and actual price. (Higher than quote)

2. We were not allocated the room we had booked.

3. The room was small, dirty, (wall paper hanging off wall) damp, ( bad odour from the wardrobe).

4. There was no hot water available the following morning. Explanation from the reception desk was unsatisfactory and unacceptable. We checked out without having had the facility to have a shower. Nobody was available to offer an apology or explanation.

5. Breakfast was only reasonable and the staff looked disinterested on the task at hand.

6. We wrote to senior management/owner (letter to each) and never even received the courtesy of an acknowledgment to our letters.

7. Has the potential to be a really great hotel but you have to remember that your customers are the ones that have to pay.

8. Unless management get their act together, will not be returning.

Stay away!!!

Room was freezing cold with a noisy radiator that didn't work. Filthy ceiling - looked like mould growing due to damp. Finally, found some broken glass on the floor.

Desk staff refused to change our room - they sent somebody to fix the radiator making it marginally less noisy.

Dining room was cold and smelt of dampness. Food was so-so. Waiting staff were generally inattentive.

Don't stay here if you want to sleep

My husband and I stayed one night at this hotel on the last night of our vacation and it was by far the worst night I've ever spent in a hotel. There was a wedding taking place at the hotel and around 9:30 that night the music started. It was so loud it sounded like it was coming from the room next door, with the bass booming. After 2 hours of this I called the front desk to see when the wedding would be over and they told us 12:30AM! We weren't pleased and I complained about the disruption to other hotel guests, at which she apologized but there was really nothing they could do.

Finally the music stopped, only to start up about 1/2 hour later! I called again and the night porter told me it was the bar room music and would last until 2AM!! When I complained that it was impossible to sleep in their hotel he told me "that's just the way it is." In the morning when we gratefully checked out I complained to the girl at the front desk and she told me it wasn't her problem, she's not responsible and then asked me how I would like to pay! Now apology, no offer to compensate, nothing. This hotel cares more about their night club and private functions than their hotel guests. They should pick to either run a hotel or a nightclub because they clearly don't do both well.

If you like to party this may be the place for you, but if you want a quiet night and would like to sleep, pick someplace else. You won't get any sleep here and customer service was poor at best.

Recently renovated - perfect wedding reception.

The hotel changed hands in 2004, and the new management are turning the place into a real gem. The team are very young, but keen to make the place work.

The hotel is on the sea-front. There are two types of room: the quirky ones in the old Victorian part (some of these have a sea view) and the new ones in the extension at the back, opened in December 2004.

A huge amount of money has been spent on the old part improving the furniture (new comfortable beds & bathrooms), but there is still a little way to go - for example: decent wardrobes and chests-of-drawers, good TV reception, internet access etc.

The new rooms at the back are typical modern ones with two king-size beds.

The breakfasts are reasonable - average sized, but well prepared. The restaurant is quality with prices to match.

As with a previous reviewer, there was some confusion over prices, something the management should sort out.

We held our wedding reception there, with most of the guests staying overnight. The organisation, service and helpfulness of the staff was outstanding, and we had the best food I've ever had at a wedding.

Don't Bother!

What can I say, When I made telephone reservation price was €75, I got there and they tried to charge me €120, I checked out and they tried charging me €100!! Also was told it was ok to stop one more night and then they told me I could only stay if I paid €280 for the extra night!

As for the rest, The hotel was 'ok'... bit like a gloryfied b&b really (about AA 2*) staff weren't the most welcoming and Manager.....utterly useless! he's sorry for the problems but tough!. I'd try Jurys Christchurch in the centre of Dublin for just €75.... they are always top class and around 3 or 4*! Bray is a nice town for half a days visit!

Midweek week break in the Esplanade

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just spent a very pleasant and enjoyable mid week break in the Esplanade Hotel. We muist compliment the staff on their friendliness.

Everyone from the receptionist to the barmen and the waitresses were courteous and chatty. The room was most comfortable especially as it looked out onto the bay. The hotel itself had an old world charm about it with a spacious reception area. I really appreciated the lilies (my favourite) and other flowers which were in abundance and gave a lovely aroma about the place. We had breakfast in the hotel - very good. With our package we had one dinner which was delicious with large portions -and served graciously. we also ate on the other nights from the bar menu which we thought was very good value. We were glad we had chosen this hotel and would recommend it without reservation.

Quaint lovely Seaside Hotel

Stayed here over the Valentines Weekend. Had a beautiful room overlooking the sea and Bray head with fabulous stained glass windows and an original fireplace. The food and service was top notch and it was only minutes away from loads of bars and restaurnats. We had free champagne and chocolates for our Valentines dinner. Only problem was that train services were not running to Dublin on theweekends and we had to get a bus into town. Otherwise a great stay and highly recomended.

Way Below Par

Not great I am afraid, considering the expense of the room. Main problems were: -Old room, bathroom moldy and damp. View was a joke, out onto roofs with all the air-conditioning outlets etc. Breakfast was OK. Room-service did not have anything on the menu.Bottom line was that if we had paid maybe £35/40 for the room we would not have complained. Was assured the Manager would write to us but never heard from them, would avoid.
