Good morning I am starting to write this on the train from Zagreb to Split. The train has arrived early so at least we can board and wait in the air-conditioning until the train leaves in 20minutes. It is sunny and hot - 28deg no clouds and very little breeze. Anyway back to how we spent our day in Zagreb. Thursday Ljubljana to Zagreb Again the …

A wonderful family reunion

Robyn: I drove us to Ljubljana this morning, which was probably a mistake, because it got Robert on edge and the stroll around the old town was a little bit 'tense'. Hmmmm. We took the funicular up to the castle but weren't inspired....we're getting choosy about our castles these days. So we did what all Croatians do and sat in a sunny street side …

Homecoming: Zed and Beyond

... idea of the nature of the articles preserved at the museum.

As the night progressed, I again met Jelena and another of her friends, Nevo, for drinks. We shared laughs and exchanged memories of different travels at one bar before walking cross-town to another bar. Along the way (as there were images of the same throughout my travels), we came across yet another statue of St. George and the slaying of the Dragon. I have always enjoyed altering perspectives ...

Covering Croatia

... back home. Taking a brief walk in the center though, it is definitely feeling like several other European capitals.

Didn't do too much sightseeing today as I found myself really tired, I hope I'm not burning out as 3 weeks are left on this adventure. Some planning to do here as I'm still debating about whether to visit Ljubljana tomorrow as I do have half a day on Friday to see Zagreb before leaving ...

Zagreb Church Roof

One church my books had said I should not miss is this one with a beautiful tiled roof.

After a short stroll uphill from the market, I walked around a corner and into the square in front of it and my mouth dropped open. I said "Oh my God" out loud. The uniformed guard looked at me like "Well, ...

Splendid hotel , good service .
Its historic past has been respected ( this hotel was built to shelter the wealthy travellers f the Orient Expres Train in the 19 century ) but all commodities are there .

Food is great especially at the restaurant attached outside the hotel ,down on the right .

    Fantastic location

Arrival to the hotel from the airport was easy. I took the airport shuttle bus to the main bus terminal, then a quick taxi ride from there. Taxi driver knew exactly where the hotel was. Upon arrival, I was greeted at the door and promptly checked in by very pleasant staff who spoke excellent English.

I stayed for 2 nights and this was a great location for a base to walk around to the various popular sights. The train station is down the street, so very convenient if you require train travel. You could walk with your luggage if needed - it's that close!!! No need to taxi. There is an underground shopping complex near the hotel....a supermarket if you want to purchase water or snacks. You can buy tram tickets at any newspaper stand. I noticed at least 3 in the underground mall.

The room itself was very spacious and a very large bathroom, which is around the corner from the main bedroom area, which is good because there is no door to the bathroom area(sinks, bathtub and shower). The toilet has a separate room with a door - no worries there! I have no complaints as I was travelling solo. There were comfy bathrobes to use and the bathroom was equipped with a hair dryer which worked well. The bed was comfortable enough, but I have had better hotel beds. The linens were fantastic with many pillows. The TV had limited English speaking channels - definitely not a deal breaker. There was also free wifi which worked very well.

The staff helped me with the many questions I had about getting to Ljubljana for a day trip by train - which I highly recommend. They were also very helpful in getting me to the bus station for my departure to further explore Croatia. I would definitely recommend this hotel. It is very historical and unique building with lots of charm.

I would certainly recommend this hotel - it was just magnificent and the meals were delicious. Had never tasted Croatian food before. The room was certainly 5 star.

    A wonderful hotel

    from

After a 29 hour flight from Melbourne, it was a treat to stay at such a beautiful and well appointed hotel. My wife and I stayed in one of the deluxe rooms, which was a generous size, had a great bathroom and a lounge and desk. Very comfortable indeed.

    Great Place !

    from

Was in this hotel in last days of july. Stayed there for 2 nights , what can i say , it's pretty good hotel , realy 5 stars hotel. I was also in Sheraton in Zagreb , and i can tell that Esplanade realy better , why you will ask , beacouse they just made restavration of their hotel , they made LAN internet cables in each room (if you have notebook , you can use internet from your room) or you always have free internet in the buisness center. Only one minus which i can tell about this hotel , that they don't have swimming pool(Sheraton has it) , maybe someone not interesting in it , so , then your choose must be Reget for sure in Zagreb !

    Did not want to leave

    from

My complaint - that our stay was only 1 night. This was an amazing hotel - it deserves the 5 star rating. Our stay here was part of a 21 night trip, so we experienced many hotels, and this was the nicest - and had the best shower and bath (separate) of all the hotels. We also had the pleasure of dining in the hotel restaurant - excellent meal. I don't know when we will be back in Zagreb but when we are, this will be our hotel.

    Excellent choice

    from

The Esplanade is an excellent hotel. From the graciousness of the staff at our initial check-in experience, to the quality and cleanliness of the room, to the property's excellent location, our stay was a first-class experience. I would strongly recommend this hotel.

    Fantastic

    from

We were at the Esplande in Febuary 2005 for a weekend in Zagreb. We would have quite happily stayed at the hotel for the whole weekend without venturing out of the hotel.

This will have to be rated as the best hotel we have visited so far, the package for the romantic weekend was spot on and everything advertised was delivered with a smile nothing was too much for the staff.

    Sumptuous and opulent

    from

This hotel has had an upgrade so that it is clearly a 5 star hotel with all that this implies. The level of opulence is characterized by sumptuous furnishings and very large rooms. It is conveniently located next to the main railway station reflecting the hotel's historic Orient Express connection. The staff are very professional with a high level of commitment to providing pleasant and courteous service for guests. Very good food from the restaurant - a particularly impressive buffet breakfast with a wonderful array of food to choose from.

    Wow spectacular !

    from

Stayed for just one night 21/09/04. What a fantastic hotel, the staff friendly and attentive, the lobby awesome. Rooms equiped to a high standard. It is very close to the station but I did not hear any trains.

You can walk to the centre of the city in 5 mins, it has to be right up there near the top of my list of favorite hotels.

Visiting Zagreb? this is the only place to stay.

    Favorite hotel ever

    from

this is a beautiful, beautiful hotel. everything about our stay at the Esplanade was perfect. from the breakfast buffet, to the lavander bath salts in the oversized bath tub, to the more than helpful staff--the Esplanade pays attention to the details. i can honestly that staying at the Esplanade was the best travel experience i have ever had. what a fabulous place!!!

    Come and Get It

    from

They have done a beautiful job renovating this old hotel. The lobby is worth a visit even if you don't stay here. At check-in they offered us a free beverage as we filled out the few standard forms. Our room was large and very well appointed - and there is free high speed internet access. We had a great weekend rate so the place really was a bargain. And it's just a short walk to all the downtown cafes and stores.
