Arrival to Croatia
Well, I have arrived to the city of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. A very easy, uneventful flight from Toronto with a very short connection thru Munich. We were a little late leaving Toronto - had to make a stop at the de-icing facilities....I'm ok with that - don't want ice on any vital plane parts!!! haha.
And there is no snow here now …
Welcome to Croatia
We met our tour guide, Ivana, at the airport. She led us to the bus which will be our home for a week, and introduced us to the bus driver, name unintelligible, and off the the hotel. Arrived there at one. Five star, centrally located. . Impressive lobby, and tried to get organized. Chris and I got a beautiful corner room, but we couldn't sign in …
Arriving in Zagreb, Croatia
Arrived in Zagreb after about 33 hours of travel and being in transit. Endured nearly 7 hours transit in Frankfurt. Was transferred to the hotel which was very elegant and the room and meals were great. Definitely worth it's 5 star rating. Hotel is just next to the railway station and I had a good view from the room. After I had checked in I went …
Goodbye Coastline
On Sunday morning we said goodbye to Pag and drove to Plitvice National Park township. We arrived at a cute Swiss looking house, something you would see in a movie. It was still freezing cold so we spent most of the afternoon in our room reorganizing our bags, switching our summer clothes for winter ones. We enjoyed a nice lunch out at a local pub and a huge dinner at our accommodation. Yesterday morning we left pretty early for the National Park ...
Zagreb
... Austrians and Hungarians in war. One of the statues was removed during the communist times when this was Yugoslavia, but then put back when they gained independence. There were a few museums, parks and churches also. The main parts of town were upper level and lower level. Both were interesting with tourist shopping streets filled with pubs, restaurants and souvenir shops. ...

Arrival to the hotel from the airport was easy. I took the airport shuttle bus to the main bus terminal, then a quick taxi ride from there. Taxi driver knew exactly where the hotel was. Upon arrival, I was greeted at the door and promptly checked in by very pleasant staff who spoke excellent English.
I stayed for 2 nights and this was a great location for a base to walk around to the various popular sights. The train station is down the street, so very convenient if you require train travel. You could walk with your luggage if needed - it's that close!!! No need to taxi. There is an underground shopping complex near the hotel....a supermarket if you want to purchase water or snacks. You can buy tram tickets at any newspaper stand. I noticed at least 3 in the underground mall.
The room itself was very spacious and a very large bathroom, which is around the corner from the main bedroom area, which is good because there is no door to the bathroom area(sinks, bathtub and shower). The toilet has a separate room with a door - no worries there! I have no complaints as I was travelling solo. There were comfy bathrobes to use and the bathroom was equipped with a hair dryer which worked well. The bed was comfortable enough, but I have had better hotel beds. The linens were fantastic with many pillows. The TV had limited English speaking channels - definitely not a deal breaker. There was also free wifi which worked very well.
The staff helped me with the many questions I had about getting to Ljubljana for a day trip by train - which I highly recommend. They were also very helpful in getting me to the bus station for my departure to further explore Croatia. I would definitely recommend this hotel. It is very historical and unique building with lots of charm.

A wonderful hotel
After a 29 hour flight from Melbourne, it was a treat to stay at such a beautiful and well appointed hotel. My wife and I stayed in one of the deluxe rooms, which was a generous size, had a great bathroom and a lounge and desk. Very comfortable indeed.
I don't know what the hotel looked like before the renovation, but it looks fantastic now. All staff were attentive and helpful, and the concierge was brilliant in checking out bus timetables and walking tours of the city for us.
The breakfast here was one of the best I have experienced. While there is also a ground floor restaurant open for lunch and dinner, unlike previous reviewers we thought it was good rather than great. However, compared to other restaurants in Zagreb, you could do a lot worse than have dinner at the hotel restaurant for at least one night of your stay in Zagreb.
In summary, a fantastic hotel for tourists and business travellers alike.
Great Place !
Was in this hotel in last days of july. Stayed there for 2 nights , what can i say , it's pretty good hotel , realy 5 stars hotel. I was also in Sheraton in Zagreb , and i can tell that Esplanade realy better , why you will ask , beacouse they just made restavration of their hotel , they made LAN internet cables in each room (if you have notebook , you can use internet from your room) or you always have free internet in the buisness center. Only one minus which i can tell about this hotel , that they don't have swimming pool(Sheraton has it) , maybe someone not interesting in it , so , then your choose must be Reget for sure in Zagreb !
Great rooms , everything near your hand whatever you want , if you need something you can always ask personal which working in hotel , they will help you kindly, it's not a problem at all. Of course , agree with other persons , great bathroom , one of the best , which i sow in hotels all over the world.
I had only breakfast, but you , of course , can have a dinner and supper there , right in the hotel , or on the street , it's Reget restoraunt from which you have a view on square and fountain. Breafast is great also , you can choosie something from menu or take by "sweden table" , fresh juice and many else.
So , in all , i can advice this hotel as for buisness trips , as for tourists , which want to be in nice place , near the centar , and just have good rest in Zagreb !
Did not want to leave
My complaint - that our stay was only 1 night. This was an amazing hotel - it deserves the 5 star rating. Our stay here was part of a 21 night trip, so we experienced many hotels, and this was the nicest - and had the best shower and bath (separate) of all the hotels. We also had the pleasure of dining in the hotel restaurant - excellent meal. I don't know when we will be back in Zagreb but when we are, this will be our hotel.
Excellent choice
The Esplanade is an excellent hotel. From the graciousness of the staff at our initial check-in experience, to the quality and cleanliness of the room, to the property's excellent location, our stay was a first-class experience. I would strongly recommend this hotel.
Fantastic
We were at the Esplande in Febuary 2005 for a weekend in Zagreb. We would have quite happily stayed at the hotel for the whole weekend without venturing out of the hotel.
This will have to be rated as the best hotel we have visited so far, the package for the romantic weekend was spot on and everything advertised was delivered with a smile nothing was too much for the staff.
First class hotel, first class service, First class accomodation
This is the only hotel to stay
Sumptuous and opulent
This hotel has had an upgrade so that it is clearly a 5 star hotel with all that this implies. The level of opulence is characterized by sumptuous furnishings and very large rooms. It is conveniently located next to the main railway station reflecting the hotel's historic Orient Express connection. The staff are very professional with a high level of commitment to providing pleasant and courteous service for guests. Very good food from the restaurant - a particularly impressive buffet breakfast with a wonderful array of food to choose from.
Wow spectacular !
Stayed for just one night 21/09/04. What a fantastic hotel, the staff friendly and attentive, the lobby awesome. Rooms equiped to a high standard. It is very close to the station but I did not hear any trains.
You can walk to the centre of the city in 5 mins, it has to be right up there near the top of my list of favorite hotels.
Visiting Zagreb? this is the only place to stay.
Favorite hotel ever
this is a beautiful, beautiful hotel. everything about our stay at the Esplanade was perfect. from the breakfast buffet, to the lavander bath salts in the oversized bath tub, to the more than helpful staff--the Esplanade pays attention to the details. i can honestly that staying at the Esplanade was the best travel experience i have ever had. what a fabulous place!!!
Come and Get It
They have done a beautiful job renovating this old hotel. The lobby is worth a visit even if you don't stay here. At check-in they offered us a free beverage as we filled out the few standard forms. Our room was large and very well appointed - and there is free high speed internet access. We had a great weekend rate so the place really was a bargain. And it's just a short walk to all the downtown cafes and stores.
