Transfer to Olympos

After breakfast we have a look at the Pirates Cave before cruising to Andriace harbour (Demre) for lunch. Bus transfer to Bayram's Tree Houses in Olympos where we arrive between 4 and 6 p.m. Check in and freshen up, ready for the nights festivities around the bonfire and dance till dawn.

Phaselis and the mount Tahtali

This trip is not very sporty, you do it by car and by cableway, but it worth it, the panoramic view from the top of the mount Tahtali - 2365m - is truly extraordinary. You can overview the coast from Antalya to Finike and the mountains of the hinterland.
It is quite easy to find the cableway, a large road sign shows its direction on the main...

Rhodiapolis; a "new" site, 30mn from Finike

Rhodiapolis has been there since thousands years but has ben re-discovered recently. before the site was inaccessible and almost totally buried. Ecavations are going on actively and a superb theater has been brought to light two years ago, so the remains of roman houses with mosaic and what I think to be roman therms and cisterns. Last summer at...

Looking for coolness in the mountain

A "yayla" is a small plateau in the mountain, about 1500 m high. In summer a lot of families leave Finike to take refuge in the yaylas and find some coolness. One of the busiest is the yayla of Ördübek. You can reach Ördübek through a small road starting on the left side of the road from Finike to Elmali, about ten kilometers after the village o...

Off to see the sea - Antalya

Antalya is a gorgeous seaside town - sparkling green water, yellow cliffs, snow capped mountains and bright sunshine. Pity its winter.
In a fit of insanity, we hire a car and promptly discover that petrol is 3 dollars a litre. Bevan has now perfected driving on the right (his lack of veering into the left lane gives us away as foreigners) an...

Married to the Sea

The night before our four day cruise from Fethiye to Olympos, Kristen
looked out into the harbor full of boats and guessed that the beautiful
big boat that pulled in was probably ours...

It wasn't...

But
though at first we couldn't believe that the boat that looked so small
and common, like all the other boats i...

Monster Breath

After leaving the boat Dave and I were dropped off in Olympus, which has many pensions, all featuring tree houses. Olympus is on the mediterranean coast and is home to ruins and the famous Mount Olympus; it's definitely a backpackers haven. We had booked a treehouse at the original treehouse pension (Kadir's) before we left on the trip, but once...

Olympos

My bus to Olympos wasn't leaving Goreme until around 9:00 p.m. I had about an hour to kill so I decided to grab a big ice cold can of Efes from the local beer stand. Immediately after I sat down on a set of steps near a young couple, the girl, apparently following my lead, went and got two beers. When she returned I jokingly said they must be Ca...

Cruises and Tree houses

As I move into more and more remote areas of Turkey, the Internet connections get slower and slower - hence me taking a long time to update my blog. But have no fear, this will be a long and good one. My last day in Selcuk took me to the Ephesus museum, which was very good. A review like this from me, having a love-hate relationship with museums...

Chapter 46: The Sunken City, and Chimaera Flames

Sunday the 25th was mostly another bus day. Getting tired of reading about those yet? Luckily they're much more enjoyable to experience, as it's nice to have the chance to kick back for a few hours and read, listen to tunes, or watch the scenery roll by. In the case of the Selcuk-Fethiye bus, the Mediterranean scenery was gorgeous. Fredierick an...
