I'll take the high road - the Grossglocknerstrasse

Friday, we left Lake Bled in Slovenia and rejoined the motorway on which we had arrived to go northwards. After stopping at the services to purchase the required vignette we entered Austria via the impressive Karawanken tunnel. At 7864m long it is one of the longest we have used this trip. We were soon driving through typical alpine scenery with the hillsides dotted with chalet buildings bedecked with floral balconies, which were set amidst lush green ...

... gate that was guarded by a dozen or so cows, all with cowbells around their necks making an enormous racket. They paid us next to no attention as we passed through the gate. In the motorcycle parking area alone there there four other bikes, and there were ...

We thought being a Monday it would be a little more quiet than the Sunday, but when we arrived at the bike parking area it was even more full - so full in fact that scooters had parked directly across the entranceway, and it was now impossible for bikes to enter through the only legal entrance to the parking area - even if there was a spot free (which there wasn't). Other scooters had parked on the footpath outside of the bike parking ...

Where Eagles Dare

... around 34 people on a bus. We had the receivers with the headphones in so we could hear the guide from far away and that was nice. Most people assume the only thing the Nazis built was the Eagles Nest but the Nazis built much of the surrounding town. The guide pointed out buildings that I didn't expect to have been built by them because they look ordinary. Hitler started coming to this mountain back in 1923 so when he rose to power in 1933, the ...
