... a wonderful repast of cakes and coffee/tea (very good tea!). And then we visited the pen room! One can only view this room with admiration. Later, as I sat down and dug through Biggy’s duplicates, Pete and Bert went off on their own. Pete doesn’t speak any German and Bert not much English, but Pete said they had a very nice conversation and told me later about how Bert ...
Gronau, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany kveeti... and let him find his way home alone. Can you imagine that happening today?
In the interests of history, we explored the small Hengelo museum, which had an unusual cellar full of pickles and a Singer sewing machine. I bought an old photo postcard of the town, then we walked back to the van der Poel ice-cream shop. It claims to have 120 flavours, but we couldn't try them all. We certainly enjoyed the ones we did try.
... my sleeping bag, only to hear the whine of a lone mosquito in the dark of my room. The kids had chosen to sleep together under a mosquito net, as if Overijssel was the last bastion of malaria. I pulled the hood of my sleeping bag round me, so that only my nose was showing. Half a minute later, the mosquito flew straight up my nose, causing me to writhe and snort ineffectually in my mummified, trussed state.
I don't know how the mozzie found me, but it stopped whining after that.
At 5:00am this ...
Havixbeck, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany mugita... Foods. Only he and I dared venture into the company's Kool Haus, where the temperature was a refreshing zero degrees or something-- it's all in Celcius. Mutti, Joysanna's host-mom, prepares a breakfast of soft boiled eggs, hard rolls, cheese, slices of meat, jams and coffee every morning. Whenever we return from an outing we have another round of the same. She sees us coming and sets it all out. Midday meal is something hot, like a spinach goulash thing that was very good ...
Coesfeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany jrutledge... the textiles and machinery industries. It currently focuses on industry relationships. They have a very large nano program. Attached is a picture of the Nanolabs they are constructing. It makes me feel like home. Also is a picture of a clock tower in the middle of the pond. Because the school is so new, they needed to invent a history. They put a church tower in the middle of the pond and have created a very elaborate mythology.
Enschede, Overijssel, Netherlands l_schultzBelow is just a silly sort of essay I came up with while commuting to work on a cold, gray, windy day. There is a sunnier sequal to it coming up soon. RUN! Leafless trees, lifeless lives And the unbearable greyness of being Just another rat in the race Just another rat in the lab Let them earn a little money Let them spent a little more Let them run in their tiny treadmills Let them run to the shops and store Nothing but stuff to fit their cage Invest ...
Winterswijk, Netherlands cb_goes_againTravelled by train from Amsterdam to Enschede which is in the east of the country. My purpose was to visit the School of Management at the University of Twente. The university is situated in a very beautiful parkland environment. Stayed at the Hotel Eden de Broeierd which is situated close to the university. The hotel itself is in a nice setting and very quiet.
Enschede, Overijssel, Netherlands clgs... asleep. Friday the 14th of April. A long breakfast as we all got up at different times. Heini needed to go to work to feed the dog as it's closed due to the bank holiday so the dog would be alone. We all went. I had a quick go on the Internet to see what time my train on Monday would be. We weren't sure exactly where the Poznan they were sending me to was so Moni and I went to the main train station but there was no one there. Whilst there Heini managed ...
