near death by jelly fish/swiss men.

... who was about 3 feet on the other side confirmed the jelly fish sighting.
So clearly, not crazy.
I booked it.
Towards the shore.
(mom, dad and ellen, do we remember the sting ray episode? This was a direct repeat)
Every wave that washed up while I was attempting to run to dry land I was positive was washing the jelly fish towards me and that it was going to wrap its little whatevers around me and sting me 7 pounds style.
So. The jelly fish episode ...

9/23

We had a pretty ridiculous first day here in Ghana yesterday. Here's the situation: we were listed as being in port in Accra, which is the capital. Big city, that's where a lot of the trips and tours are through, etc. But the ship is actually docked in Tema, a smaller industrial city with nothing to do in it 18 miles away from Accra. So we have to take a shuttle into the city, which takes about an hour during the day with traffic. And when ...

... are 2 benches and a small set of stairs that the kids squeeze themselves onto.
Kadri got us a dry erase board so that pretty much constitutes official.

Kissemah village is quickly becoming one of my favorite places in Ghana thus far. The people there are the most appreciative people I think I have ever met.
The kids that come are anywhere from 2-15 so it’s really hard to teach them all and not have it be too easy or too hard but you wouldn’t be able to tell ...

... and that we would have a good chance of getting on teams if we came out, so i think we might go together. we are talking about trying cross country. The competition is an 8k race. I figure we run at least 5K a day, so 8k competition shouldn't seem like too much (it's about 4.9 miles, i think).

but, i dont know--i've heard a lot about track stars from Africa. We'll see if Leslie and I can keep up. If not, I'll just train with them so that i don't slack off ...

... marketplace in Medina which is right next to Accra.

All those pictures of African woman holding huge bowls on their heads are totally authentic. This market place had everything.

Everything.

Including pigs feet. Cow intestines. Whole fish.

Going here with malaria medication nausea probably not the best idea but it was still amazing!

Wonder FULL.

So….not too much has happened during the past few days. I haven't really left the house much. EK left on Wednesday and I started my lessons with Promise again on Thursday. We’re polishing Adzro (that’s the name of the piece he’s teaching me) and he’s teaching me some more rhythms for the funeral.

On Wednesday, Stephanie and Jesse arrived. Stephanie is a CalArts alum and Jesse is a friend of hers. I went ...

... she’s there standing next to us, dancing along. It was so cute. She’s about two or three years old, and she was dancing like she was at a hip-hop club. It was too cute to not document it, so Uncle grabbed his video camera and taped her. Then, I remembered that there was a piece on Uncle’s cd that I really liked, so I played it for them and asked them to teach it to me. It’s called Jarigu De Salema. The story of the piece is actually really cool. It’s a ...

Yummy food and my first date in Ghana

... have three really nice paintings. Brother and I ate lunch. He bought me rice balls and I ate with my hands. It was fun J So it's pretty much mushed up rice in the shape of balls, and they cover it with a broth and some meat. He asked if they had a meatless broth, and they said they did, so I took that. It still tasted like meat, though. I think they thought I didn't want meat chunks. Oh well, I wasn't going to starve myself, so I ate. I also had some soymilk, Vitamilk ...

... person room oceanside for 23 cedis, equal to about 20 usd. i don't think you can do that anywhere in the US!!! the food was fairly inexpensive and the beach was free. So I played around in the sand and collected shells on saturday, then Sunday morning we got up really early in hopes that the tide would be lower so that I could get the shells without playing chase with the waves. unfortunately the tide doesn't change here, so i was SOL. We then took a shared ...
