Day Trip to Ancient, Ancient Greece

... who walked there before me. It’s so hard to describe the emotional feeling you get when you get to physically be somewhere like this.

Seeing Mycenae was crucial to our time in Greece. It helped us better understand the things we’d been seeing in other places, up until that point. And as you will read in the Athens blog entry, it really let our minds and experiences come full circle with understanding ancient Greece and our world’s history.

Note

Hi everybody,

As you all know, we are back in the states! I haven't had time to finish writing the last three blog entries but I will as soon as I am able. I just wanted to let you guys know so you can check back over the next few days.

I hope everyone is excited to read about Athens because that was our last city and it was epic. Check back soon!

Day Trip

... center of the orchestra area and when you speak, people even in the highest row can hear you clearly. The trick is to project your voice downward a little bit, toward the ground. This is because it is hollow beneath the orchestra floor and that helps project your voice clearly around the theater.

We had fun climbing up to the top row and listening to each other from up there. There were a ...

Be Careful What You Say

Cycled into the ancient theater of Epidavros - heralded to be the best preserved of the ancient world, and I believe it could be true.

Immense in size it can seat 14 000 people, and it’s still used today. Built into the surrounding hillside, it’s extremely stable and it shows. Barely any decay even though it was made in the 3rd century BC. Incredible to see how perfect the ...

Bikes on a Bus

... centers like Athens. However, in this little town the boats are unreliable in summer, and unheard of it winter. I had hoped to jump up the coast aways and get somewhere to explore for our last remaining days in Greece rather than cycle in pain!

But even without boats, there are still busses so all was not lost. Boarding the bus required removing all the bags from the bikes and taking off the front tires. But there were ...

Be worthy of victory: the Nemean Games

... and it was clear right away that he was my better. I put all my heart into it anyway, for my honour. Then he glanced over his shoulder, and next thing I knew I was gaining on him. It was much too soon for a man of Olympic calibre to get tired, and my gnarly little feet hadn't suddenly grown wings. Maybe it wasn't his fault; maybe he had orders. Athenians may not know how to treat royalty, but they're the worst people for flattery ...

Nemean Games!

... that contain surviving rhythmic and melodic details of antiquity" (Nemean Games programme book, p. 19). Although they are facing away from us, we can still hear them quite well: the stadion has sound properties rather like the ancient amphitheatres. Hearing ancient music in an ancient location gives me chill bumps. The second special event is a oplitodromos, a hoplites race by twelve members of Spartas Mores (Spartan Battilions), a group ...

Peloponnese: land of the gods

... to the base of the Palamidi and climb the 999 stairs to its summit, more than 200 metres above sea level. Which is exactly what I did. Who said it was only mad dogs and Englishmen eh? This vertical hike wasn't as great an ordeal as I make it out to be and the reward was a bizarre collection of geometrically challenging bastions covering a ...

Carnival!!!!!!

... The walk around the peninsula was relaxing and enjoyable. We got to see a man fishing and several little fishing boats out in the bay. Everything was so picturesque. I felt as if I was walking in a painting. There were people strolling hand and hand, guys rock climbing, and people out in the water swimming. We made it all the way around to the beach. The water is like ice but there were people swimming in it. The beaches ...
