I didn't put anywhere near as much work as I wanted to into my Mandarin last year, but that doesn't stop my thought process going as follows: OK, they are not speaking to me in English, but I can understand what they are saying. ... had a enjoyable meal which was neither quick nor cheap but we all laughed and said ‘Hey this can be our nice restaurant out for this part of our holiday’ and Zach was very well behaved which was a relief.
