... populous. Today, the hospital is now gone, the school closed years ago, the social club no longer open, buildings are derelict and most people have fled to Moscow for work. All that's now open is one small shop and the largest section in the shop is the vodka section. When we arrived here with bottles of wine as gifts we could only open them by pushing the cork in. No one in any houses we visited owned a wine bottle opener as vodka is the only drink ...

Another beautiful day, it stopped snowing about a month ago and now I think temperature in the early 20's - big difference to St Petersburg and we had been expecting temperatures in the minus. Went sightseeing down to the Kremlin and the Red Square. Had no idea that the Kremlin would be so big and imposing with is dark red brick walls ...

Handily, there was a BIFFA shop just along from the station. This was the first big supermarket we had come across and it was perfect for finding all the supplies that we needed.
Heading back to the platform, we were just in time to see our train pull in. We made our way down to our carriage number 15. After some confusion with boarding the train, the provodnitsa (The dragon lady who looks after the train carriage) ...

... every step of the way, first man in space, first space walk and countless others which I forget now, but they missed out on the big one so it seems to get forgotten. It was a fascinating insight into the soviet side of the space race and later exploits with MIR and the International space station. Well worth a visit. In the evening we mostly just chilled out in the hostel after a busy day and planned ahead for Irkutsk as we will be getting the Trans-Siberian the next evening. ...

It was so strange last night lying here thinking.........I'm actually sleeping in Moscow...........weird, this travel thing is all starting to become real.
