    ... features they had seen in the west. Today approximately 1,800 of these buildings are still standing. We visited the Fangshi Diaolou built in 1920 by members of the Fang Clan.

    We went to the Chen Clan Academy this mornng, stunning architecture. This was a temple built by the Chen family members where their youngsters could come and study for their examinations. A fabulous building going 3 courtyards back. There was a lovely museum with a reconstruction of a Guangzhou house and artworks.

    ... with a little park by the river. We had lunch in a the delightful "Orient Express" French Restaurant where the staff were lovely and helpful. Two old carriages have been made into dining cars. Weather permitting we plan to return for an evening meal during our stay.

    Traveled by overnight D Soft Sleeper train from Xiamen to Guangzhou, leaving at 17.45 and arriving at 06.30 this morning. The train was old and the facilities were not as good as when I traveled on a Chinese overnight train previously. This one had squat toilets and a wash hand unit which was stained and flaking and had clearly seen better days. Not a 5 star experience, but a Chinese experience nonetheless!

    Half Way There

    It's the end of the month of January, and with that, the semester as well. Time has flown as I now ready myself for the month holiday in South East Asia.
