... very
rare, a herd of tsessebe, just off the road. We followed this up with 3
hyena who came onto the road and offered a magnificent photo
opportunity with the rising sun. Next was a honey badger, who tried to
trick us by using a storm drain under the road to hide but eventually
showed himself and crossed the road in front of us. As the sun warmed
up the veld, one by one the usual suspects showed themselves including
a massive bull elephant at ...
Pretoriuskop, Mpumalanga, South Africa endlesstales... way to settle in, but after 2 days we felt we had to move on and tackled the public transport system for the first time - everything and everybody is transported by minibus here, which is loads of fun especially when you find yourself on a very full minibus on a very hot day with a very bog backpack on your knees :-) But we did get to where we wanted to go just fine - Malolotja National Park, on the border to South Africa. Here we spent 3 days ...
Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa katndaveBerg en Daal Restcamp, Kruger, 20th September 2009

We were up early and ready to queue at the gate, and yes it was a big queue. We drove towards Lower Sabie Restcamp keeping on the tar road for most of the way. Paul was beginning to get a bit disappointed as he hadn't seen many big cats in Kruger, then as luck would have it Paul spotted a leopard in a tree quite a distance from the roadside. We managed to get some quite good ...
Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga, South Africa neilandchris... before me. They called their bank and found out cash came out (around $250 CDN), so they cancelled their cards. I talked to CIBC a few days later to confirm that I was fine - lucky. Stayed at a funky backpackers called Nelspruit Backpackers. Pool tables, outdoor pool, bar all for less then $14 a night. Met a white south African who has came back from traveling up to Kenya (same route I was plan on doing). After exchanging travel stories and experiences the ...
Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, South Africa easyrider1234... of the best parks we have been to anywhere. We saw lots of game except the elusive leopard, even though this morning we awoke at 4:00 am to make the 4:30 am gate opening. They do not move their clocks for daylight savings time, not sure why because it gets dark around 6:30 - 7:00 pm and light around 4:30 am. We have been going to bed at around 8 or 9 and getting up pretty early. We are now in Barberton, just south of Kruger and we are hanging out whilst ...
Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa samndoug... awesome as we all sit around the table and enjoy soup and traditional bush cooking. The 2 canadian ladies (Kim and Melissa?)are really nice, the older Canadian guy (Mr. John) is a bit odd but nice all the same, and Richard is priceless in his non-stop entertainment!! We make a campfire after dinner and sit around watching stars for a bit before ...
Nelspruit, South Africa madman96... River Canyon.
Nelspruit, South Africa vangorp... was closed so there was no chance of getting a visa that day and we were not sure how expensive it would be, we had heard it could be up to $80. We did not know either if the embassy would be open on the next day either as it was New Years Eve. Some people said it would, others that it would not. We also discovered that the bus would probably not stop at the border long enough for us to get a visa, so we may well have had to make our own way ...
Nelspruit, South Africa domjonna... wouldn't move. We decided to check on a trade, and so I returned to the rental counter. When I explained the problem, the entire staff was familiar with Chico and his brethren, and reacted knowingly. They explained that this was just Chico's genes, and described how to rectify things. Confident that all would be well, we headed on our way to Pretoria, where we would stay for the night. The drive was an experience, as I learned more interesting facts about Chico's temperament. For ...
Kruger Park, South Africa andymo99... Zuma Zuma continued in the same vein. Unfortunately, we saw very few animals comparatively. Apparently, until 6 months ago, the lodge was a hunting property and the fear in the animals was apparent - also the lack of cooperation between the management of our lodge and the surrounding ones. There was a lion kill within 1km in on a neighboring lodge's property. But, due to sore relations between management/ ownership we were not allowed in to see it. What a pity. In the end of the big ...
