Botswana (first stop in Africa). This is Africa's richest country thanks to a huge reserve of diamods. Just north of South Africa, this nation of 1.7 million is about the size of Texas and has been independent of Britain since 1966. The Brits had a 'soft' presence here and weren't as harsh in their colonial 'oversight' as they were in other areas. Indeed, widespread English and good infrastrcture, health, transportation, and general wealth have been achieved by an efficacious Botswana leaders...
Gaborone, Botswana akbarSo here we are in this amazing part of the world. After 5 hours on the first flight to Washington DC and another 15 hours and 16 minutes (I counted every one of them)..... we are finally here, showered, feeling refreshed with a red wine in hand. The blog title refers to the strange instructions we recieved on South African Airlines. I could understand what they were saying but now I don't understand what they mean. Could be a long month. The bad news was that we got a SSSS designation in US C...

... we were mega jet lagged and our king single beds were much more inviting than the airport floor and our seats on the plane!!! The next day was an early start, another tour down to the Cape peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. You might remember learning about the Cape of Good Hope at school in the history class - although neither of us did lol!! At Cape Point we also realised how totally unfit we are - puffed after walking up the stairs to get to a lighthouse, even after ...
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa njbutler... a friend from high school who is working for the Peace Corps outside Jo'burg. Liz is waiting for me at the airport and we grab a rental car and decide to head to The South African Lion Park (www.lion-park.com) which I've heard so much about. Two hours, five gas stations, downtown Jo'burg (not too pretty), and a very long loop around the city later we wind up at our destination. We ...
Johannesburg, South Africa madman9610.5 hours later and I'm finally in Africa. The flight wasn't so bad because I downed 2 sleeping tablets and slept like a baby. Woke up about 2 hours out of Johannesburg as we were flying over Madagasca....saw the stars over Madagascar, it was such a clear night...amazing! Spend 4.5 hours waiting around in ...
Johannesburg, South Africa tquast... park bench in side the tent. It was a little weird being in a tent after the last time I was in one I got shot, but I figured if I'm going to go it might as well be sleeping on a park bench in a collapsed tent in the middle of the African bush. 13th February Mica Mines and Frogs in Shoes. Today I went to see a working mine and processing facility located near the resort in Mica. As the name suggests "mica" was originally discovered at this mine. It is a natural ...
Hoedspruit, South Africa olibray... feeling as flat as a pancake, and three thoughts; a) bloody hell the ground is a long way away - no, wait, **** isn't it getting closer very quickly (this is the sanitized version of my actual thoughts) and b) i thought my life was meant to flash before me - damn it must have been dull because i cannot think of anything right now ! and c) If i throw up will it hit the instructor strapped behind me and cause him to go blind and for us both to ...
Cape Town, South Africa jimbarnard... was quicker, but I liked it. The way in was different - not the highway of blight via blackened Witbank. This was the route of the man who knew - and for the first time in a long time I didn't feel that terrible to be back. Relaxing can be a good thing, I've decided. Not that I ever really feel like I have a home, but again, it was good enough for the day. Thanks for driving.
