    ... mild forms of Dutch colonial architecture near our hotel in the city centre... but it was definitely crumbling all right. Also, don't get us started on the hotel... paying more for a private double room here as we did for some lovely three star hotels elsewhere... we were pretty disappointed with this place.     ... ape-ing around. It's amazing how their four limbs seemed to be completely interchangeable, and if you couldn't see a head at any point it was almost impossible to tell which way up they were.

    The bus journey took about an hour to get to the Medan central area, during which we began to get a sense of Sumatra's scenary. The outskirts were rural, green, completely flat, covered with palm trees and reminded us both of northern Vietnam!
