Laredo

When a tire blows - you stop!

Monday the 13. We had to get up early in the morning to pack. We brought stuff from the house to the motor home. We stopped doing that at 1:30. When we left, we got on highway 83.w. We had a blowout on highway 83n. We heard a lot of noise and the rv started to shake. We waited 3 to 4 hours on the side of the road and the temp was 110*. Papaw brought out chairs and we sat in the shade of ...

The Day Before...

Its 6:15 PM, and our bus is about to depart for Queretaro, where we will connect to another bus or taxi onto San Miguel de Allende. I was surprised at how easy it was to get across the border. Karen and I went to the Mexican Consulate in Laredo to get our permisos. After eating lunch with my folks, we went to International Bridge #1 where we walked across with our luggage. Once across, we went into the immigration office to pay the fees for the permiso and then walked a few ...

Cristmas '07

Hello to Everyone, Thought I'd better update the blog before the memories get too fuzzy as every day brings another adventure, with new places to explore and new people to meet. We spent a couple of days in Marathon with the whole rv park at a removated historical motel to ourselves. They had what I'd call a garden lounge, an adobe walled courtyard garden with a fountain and patio area complete with rustic ...

Leaving Laredo

... Louie at their house. From there we went to a locally owned Mexican café , Victoria's Mexican Restaurant, and had a great dinner. It wasn't that late, but we had the whole place to ourselves. Louie mentioned that he was writing a book and it just happens that Paul published a book last year so they exchanged information of how he got it published. Before we left, Paul gave him an autographed copy of the book, 'Old ...

... had to open up my pack for the soldiers. We then pulled of the highway and parked the bikes in front of the old Mission. Mission San Bernardo is one of the sixteen Spanish Missions on the Camino Real, or Royal Road, that goes from Nachitoches, Louisiana to Saltillo, Coahuila in Mexico. It was begun in 1702.We walked around the perimeter and found an open gateway and went inside. One of the most notable parts of the mission is a domed room with the dome constructed ...

Friday Morning

... but in recent years, Vern has been trying to change the name because it's not supposed to be a land grab. It's more like a time when the established camps come to set up and newcomers are asked to respect those areas are not claim a spot where a camp has been set up for years. As I passed the thirteenth mile marker, I blew past the old Border Patrol Checkpoint for the first time. They had finally opened the new high-tech checkpoint at mile marker thirty since I had been up the road last ...

Friday Morning

... they were repairing the results of an encounter with a deer three weeks before. After lunch, I went to Casa Avant and got unloaded and geared up. My intention had been to stick to the existing trails and not make any new ones, but that didn't last very long. I followed the trail along the Medina River and came up to a creekside that looked real inviting and would only need a few briars cut out to make a nice but challenging section. The thick layer of leaves made ...
