      ... path from the kitchen to the main house became known as the whistling walk.

      The Civil rights museum was distressing and moving and informative. We learned about the segretation that existed in Birmingham up until the mid seventies.

      We stopped into a roasted peanut factory that is still roasting in machines that are over a century old. We ate peanuts fresh out of the roasters. The smell was amazing.

      We have been preparing for our trip since we decided to go in March. This week we finalized all the accommodation reservations. I ordered a new purse: the thing came in yesterday and is astonishingly tiny! So cute! And it will leave my hands free to carry shopping bags.

      Today we are driving to Atlanta, the next to the last leg of this trip. We're going to meet up with Alexx, look at some apartments, have dinner with Alexx and then drive to Pam's house up in *******.       ... I knew Birmingham was an iron producing city, but I didn't realize that all the ingredients for iron - iron ore, coal, and limestone - are all present in Birmingham. If you come to Birmingham, I recommend you come see the statue and the museum, if you have the time. If you were wondering, Birmingham no longer produces iron and steel. Like the other major steel producing cities in the US, that production has ceased.
