... a couple of hours at each dinner service.

You know that saying 'if something seems too good to be true it probably is' well that pretty much sums up our first experience of helpx. Things didn’t really start too well, we turned up in Mersing where we had been told to go on our first day of work and turned up at the office to find it closed. We phoned our boss Jasbeer who told us we were meant to have phoned as the boat had already left so we sat ...

      Unplanned stopover

A travel blog entry by keeleymclaren on Feb 21, 2013

I'd been warned Mersing wasn't a particularly nice area so wanted to find somewhere to stop ASAP. After about 20 minutes I managed to find somewhere fairly cheap although it was a dive with a shared bucket shower and squat toilet but I just needed it for the bed as I was ready to crash.

I woke up feeling good and walked down to the jetty to find out the times of the ferry to Tioman island as I knew they left several times a day. Unfortunately due to the low ...

... the driver of our original bus now behind the steering wheel, and apparently he had no clue on how to drive a stick shift! He got a few pointers from some random fellow, and off we went. He stalled on an uphill and for a while it seemed like we would drive all the way to Mersing in first gear. In the end, it turned out it was 3rd gear. At this point we were too exhausted to care though. Somehow the bus seemed to have survived, since at 3 am we were woken up ...

we have very little time left in the internet cafe so forgive the briefness!

we are in mersing - a strange little nothing town but with a port to get to some tropical islands off the coast. we have been to palau timoman (look it up!) lovely beach, blue sea, unreliable ferry, mountainy jungle interior... we stayed on the beach.

long coach trip to mersing during which we saw a pair of monkeys... and a lot of traffic.

must dash - time is up!

      more soon...
