Kyle's 30th birthday turned out to be an incredible day. We started off with the hotel bringing him a cake and singing to him during breakfast. Then we decided to take an adventure to the island's most famous beach. We drove for an hour and a half south through the mountains, much of it on the edge of a huge gorge. The views were incredible and there were several quaint villages cascading down the slopes. We spotted several picturesque churches and an abundance of ...

... Our hotel is inside the old Venetian city walls, which are filled with cozy alleys and picturesque courtyards. Later we walked over to the town beach for a swim. On our way we ran into the daily market that put most of our California farmers markets to shame. The fish, cheese, produce, and honey all looked delicious. After a while on the beach, we found a good waterfront restaurant and were shocked by how low the prices were ...

... Great walk. Beautiful scenery. A formed path most of the way and all downhill so easy. Came out the bottom about 3pm (I was a slow walker as some people did it in 4-5 hours) at a town called Agia Roumeli. A swim at the beach (deserved), and then a boat ride to the next town on the coast that had a road to it (Sougia) Then it was the bus back to Chania arriving at 9pm. Pretty full day. Tired but ...

... did it cost? What's your favourite place? Why is your face so red?

My most enjoyable answer to the question, "So what part of America are you from?" is, "The Canadian part." When they sheepishly apologize, I respond to those who are English, "That's okay, Irish people always make that mistake." Some get it, some don't. The same can be done interchangeably with Kiwis and Aussies.

Our favourite was when we ...

... park, exactly 5 hours and 13km from the start. About 12 folks were sitting in the shade of a cafe/shack waiting to take a €1.50 bus ride for the last 3km out of the park and to the ferry. We decided to spend that money on ice cream, so we hiked to the minuscule town in 20 minutes to discover hundreds of tourists waiting for the ferry! Many of them had been there for hours after finishing the hike at the allotted times. At 5:30, ice creams in hand, we boarded ...
