Who would have thought that a volcano in Idaho would have thrown so much ash into the air that several feet of it landed all the way into eastern Nebraska? That's what happened millions of years ago and the skeletons of the animals it killed weren't discovered until the early 1970's. skeletons of these animals are preserved in their death positions,
complete with evidence of their last meals in their mouths and stomachs
and their last steps preserved in the sandstone below.
Blue skies this morning. Breakfast at Helen's and then we hit the road. Highways 20 & 12 run along northern Nebraska. Small towns, nice highways with very little traffic. We saw a cattle drive with a pickup leading about 25 cows being herded by 2-4wheelers along the side of the road. Had lunch at the Frosty Drive-In. In Valentine Ne. This was mostly a driving day. It's a kick to have a Valentine's Day dinner in Valentine, Neb., but not to be outdone, we'll be back in O'Neill for the Big St. Patrick's Day festivities there, including the parade with the famous green horse!
Orchard is a delightful community just on the edge of the Sand Hills and off the beaten path -- which is a very, very good thing, if you love rural Nebraska as much as this man from Palmer, Neb., does!
