Scotland: Where men enjoy wearing skirts

Today I woke up in the tiniest hotel room I've ever slept in. I think it was even smaller than the last dorm room I lived in, and that is saying quite a lot. There was barely enough room to get my suitcase in. But all of that doesn't matter because our hotel is situated on the main road dividing the old and new of Edinburgh. Scotland is beautiful. And it brings me joy to see all the kilts. Love that Scottish heritage. Plus, men look good in skirts. Very flattering for their legs. Don't know w...

Sightseeing in beautiful Edinburgh

Hiya!

After leaving the Lake District, Marky drove us up to Scotland! It was quite an epic long journey as Mark decided to take the long route round via the north lakes and some winding roads called passes. We stopped for about an hour in Gretna Green which is basically the first town you get to in Scotland. Unfortunately for Mark it was in a shopping outlet complex so we stayed longer than he would have liked! He did manage to have one of the largest coffees I have ever seen.

Historical Traveler Reviews of Ellersly House Hotel Edinburgh

Great Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Mt. Royal for several days in September 2004. I had a top floor room with a balcony. The view of Edinburgh was fantastic. My room was kept clean and staff was friendly and helpful. The location is superb, with many attractions being within walking distance from the hotel. The food was good but not outstanding. I ate most of my meals in nearly pubs anyway because I enjoy their atmosphere. The furnishings were older but I didn't really care as long as it was clean.

The main drawback was the noise from the street. The roar of buses, sirens and noisy drunks going home either kept me awake or woke me up.

Great food, good location

We enjoyed a 2 night stay in March 2003. The restaurant has stunning views of Edinburgh castle and the food was excellent, good choice and of fabulous quality. Buffet style breakfast was of a very high quality and set us up for the day. Our room was spacious and adequately equipped....and quiet! Hotel well situated for train station, local attractions and shopping. The staff are friendly and helpful. Only gripe - it took quite a while for our room to be ready when we checked in. We found the hotel to be good value for money and we will stay here again next time we visit Edinburgh.

Great location, but rooms very variable

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great location, friendly staff, good buffet breakfast, but our room overlooked a huge airconditioning plant and duct-work which was very noisy. Castle view rooms cost an extra £20 per night, which makes it expensive for a 9' x 12' room, assuming consistent room sizes.

A Disappointment

from A TripAdvisor Member
Booked a feature room which turned out to be a pokey little room in need of some new bedding and decoration. The safety catch on the window was broken, the room was absolutely stifling and we had to send for a fan and the noise from the traffic outside kept me awake most of the night. The Stair carpet was positively dangerous and an accident is waiting to happen there! I could go on, but i think you have probably got my opinion on this hotel by now!!

Fine print ripoff.

from A TripAdvisor Member
Cancelled booking 40 days ahead of arrivals, was not forewarned of cancellation charge. (Profit perk) Excessive, unreasonable and not on confirmation. Read fine print carefully everywhere on this site, I only know of this hidden charge, there could be others. Good luck.

Mom and I at the Jarvis Mont Royal

from patsyannie
We spent four days here in June for Mom's 70th birthday present. I chose the location due to its location for someone with a bit of difficulty walking. I purchased a standard room breakfast and dinner package from their web site last winter for about 330 pounds total. With the decline of the dollar, it was a good value for a three star hotel.

Positives include a clean twin standard room with a nice clean bathroom. The buffet breakfast was fine. The dinners were a choice from four appetizers and four desserts. The appetizer was served and then you went to a buffet line where a chef carved or served your choice of four daily main dishes. There was always a vegetarian (penne pasta) dish, a fish dish (usually salmon with different choices, and one or two red meat options. You then served yourself a hot vegetable and potato. Dessert was brought to your table. The food was tasty. We were served at a table for two with a lovely view of the castle.

Negatives include the fact that standard rooms overlook the back or interiors of some buildings. There is an ongoing noise from supposed ventilation systems that runs between the hours of 5 am and 10 pm. I believe that it last longer. This would not be a good room type for light sleepers. Front rooms or castle view rooms can be added for a 20 pound supplement. However, they may also hear the noise from buses and other transportation on Prince's Street.

The Citylink Bus from Glasgow Airport stopped about a block away. The cost from the Airport for two was about 13 pounds.

This is a moderate option that could be improved greatly with some double paned windows. I believe that there is no air conditioning. So, beware the noise in the summer.

Enjoyed our stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here in March 2004. We really enjoyed the hotel and its staff. The rooms were nice, clean, and I loved the bathtubs, just right for a long bubblebath after a day of sight-seeing. Breakfast was great. (Another reviewer complained about the tea-ladies; they ask for your room number once, and bring you tea or coffee. They were very pleseant and sweet. Some people will find anything to complain about!) This hotel is a little bit older, but if that's the worse of your complaints, you need to lighten up!! (I'm sorry, I'm writing this more as a rebuttle to another review.) We had a beautiful view of Edinburgh Castle, at night it was really awesome! We would definately stay here again!!

Great location - poor hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The location on Princes street is great. The "view" of the castle may exist if you have a front room, but ours was in back and looked out on the airconditioning well. Decor poor and bathroom very poor condition.

My biggest peave was that free TV advertised, but anything you want to see is pay per view. Access up the front stairs difficult with luggage.

We wouldn't stay here again.

Not the worst and not the best.

from Bobster2006
Okay, the hotel may be located on Princes Street but it does have a few problems. Firstly, it needs re-decorated - the carpet on the stairs & hallways are grubby and torn. The room does suffice, although they are in need of a refurbishment as well - straight back to the 80's. Good choice for the breakfasts, apart from the 'tea-ladies' that constantly ask for your room number, but all in all, the food was good. For the money we paid, it was worth it (60 quid per room) but if we paid the going rate we would not have been happy. There's a catch 22 as well, if you are in a front facing room you get the traffic noise from Princes Street - back facing you hear the air con.Don't let as this put you off though - the beds are comfy, the breakfast is good. Use it as a base but don't be expecting The Ritz.
