Hoi An & Hanoi - Day 116-117

Day 116 - 17/06/08 A very very late night, left the Salsa club at 5.30am, walked out of the bar in the morning sun to the locals practising thi chi on the riverside. Quite a surreal sight! Woke up in the late morning for obvious reasons and caught up on some admin on the Internet while I waited for my taxi to take me to Da Nang airport, which is around 30km away. The flight to Hanoi only takes one hour and fifteen minutes. If I opted for the bus you're looking at an 18 hour journey on bumpy V...

I love Hanoi. It couldn't be more different to Laos, but none the less I love it. The most noticable thing initially is the constant noise of horns. Horns are used to warn other drivers you're approaching and are used pretty much contantly. Given that almost every inhabitant of Hanoi seems to be on their moped for at least 14 hours of every day, thats a lot of horns. The rule of the road is easy. Don't hit anyone, after that anything goes. Crossing the road is simply a case of keeping a slow ...

Good Morning, well, you know

If Southeast Asia were the A-Team, Thailand would definitely be Faceman. He's pretty clean, good-looking, he probably knows some British people, and he's definitely the only one with a tux. If somebody's gonna welcome you into the A-Team garage, or wherever it is that they keep the van, from a PR standpoint it should be Face. He's definitely not my favorite member of the team, but he's nice and he's still one of the guys and can provide all the weird smells and incredible sights the rest of t...

Watching Tom and Jerry

Hello, After arriving at 5am we managed to find a hotel with Rob and Sue, wait for the room and get Luke straight to an International Clinic by half8. He was examined by a doctor and had a blood test, he's got a virus so lots of rest and fruit juice is needed. As a result we haven't been up to much, we're hoping to get some sightseeing in tomorrow. xxxxx

Our b*s from Hoi An to Hanoi was a supposed to be a sleeper but due to some confirmation confusion we got stuck with a regular for the overnight part of the journey. We had a couple of hours hanging around Hue waiting for the connection so we did some exploring of the old citadel in the city. It was very, very hot though and we weren't exactly overly excited with the citadel but it passed the time for us anyway.
In Hanoi we picked up a pair of converse shoes each for a total of 16 Euro, sw...

... are not even counting the people who are just trying to sell us food, clothing or souvenirs! It is exhausting because some of them ask multiple times! We went to the Ngoc Son Temple which was founded in the 18th century. It is located on an island in the Hoan Kiem Lake. It cost us 10,000 dong each to check it out. We crossed the red bridge and went to see a giant embalmed tortoise. There was a sign that said there are others in the lake, but I highly doubt it. The ...
