Out of the widow Bahrain looks like lots of dust with skyscrapers on. Inside it is a strange mix of Christmas decorations lots of tour groups who look like they might be going on pilgramage, 25k rolexes in duty free, mcdonalds, costa and free internet to keep us amused. We've got 2hrs to kill - body clocks already out of sink! Am going to try and learn some nepalese from a podcast.
Bahrain, Bahrain paulandvicki... little towns like this too in Saudi?! (I knew only the big city!). The bus trailed along like a motorized camel, and I began to notice that the sides of the highway was wired all along the desert. Wondered why that was: surely we were not driving past anyone's prime desert property! No it was to keep the camels from straying across. It was then that I got sight of my first camel, its mouth edging towards a shrub. From then on it was a variety of camels-black, white and brown ...
Al Khobar, Ash Sharqiyah, Saudi Arabia ashok_s... to the west and Qatar to the east. We didn't know where it was until we were due to fly home via the island. It's interesting to note the road bridge (King Fahd Causeway) which links the two countries and is 17 miles long. Soon to be surpassed by the Bahrain to Qatar 'Friendship Bridge' currently under construction at 25 miles - it will be the longest bridge in the world.
Manama, Bahrain paulngail... with one guy who was buy himself. We all introduced ourselves (I finally learned the southerner's name---Mike). The new guy was a navy officer of 17 years named Dave---he was 34 but looked about 24. He was heading home for his grandma's funeral. Beers were around $7 US.

We chatted until it was time for Mike's plane-he went to board and I went back to the transfers desk. I got down there and there wasn't too much info to be had-I joked around it bit with the transfer staff ...

Brilliant -- except that it some weeks it works, some it doesn't. T - Thursday night. The Saudi work week is Saturday - Wednesday. The Bahrain work week is Sunday - Thursday. These two factors make Thursday night the night to go out in Bahrain; Saudis cross the causeway in droves and every restaurant and club is packed. U - US Embassy. We ...
Manama, Bahrain elizabeth7901... the BBQ whilst I stayed indoors doing food prep and table setting. Who's a clever girl? We had a lovely feast. We then went to visit a friend of Paullie's - Yvonne Trueman. She dabbles in reflexology and massage, among other things, and gave Kath a lovely treatment. Kath was most pleased. Yvonne is an amazing woman! She's travelled extensively and does Charity work all over the world. Originally from London, she's been living in Bahrain for 30 ...
Manama, Bahrain missfissy... claiming there country is the "Las Vegas of the Middle East" And finally, one more note, the title "How I Spent Mr. Clinton's Money" is in reference to the Clinton Foundation Scholarship I received to attend AUD. Clinton has long been tight with the Sheikh of Dubai and often comes here to make speeches. The Sheikh himself owns AUD (just as he owns virtually everything in Dubai) So in a gesture of good will and a way of ...
Manama, Dubai, Bahrain midtowntsl0... Making a mental note of the 'every night but Thursday' for next time) The night went well into the morning with us ending up in a dance club called Liquid, techno music, strobe lighting and shots at the bar all getting a bit much when we hadn't been out for a while. So after stopping for food on the way home, as you do, Edwina and I gave up on the walking and hailed a cab waving to rest of the girls who were intent on walking the ten minutes home (Still at least 36 ...
Manama, Bahrain kimande... To make a long story short, I didn't realize my wallet was in the cab until it was 200 yards away, leaving my dumb ass chasing after it. Normally, in any other country, I would have never seen my wallet, or my cash, again. Not so in Bahrain. The cab driver picked up another passenger, and the passenger gave my wallet to him. About forty-five minutes after the cab driver dropped me on the curb, he came back and found me waiting there hopefully. He returned my wallet to me and ...
