... events. To make a difference in people that we don't know and with whom we have no connection is even more powerful than when we do the same with our host families and alumni connected to the program. But it's so different look out in the audience and see your host dad with a camera in his hands, or to lock eyes with your host sister as she sings along to the songs. I ...
Sundsvall, Midnight Sun Coast, Sweden meluebke... quest, you may ask? Yes! We were! We had to crawl through walls, in pantries, and across kitchens as rats without getting caught by cats. We even had to get food without getting caught! And if the cat was around us, we would grab it by the tail.

No, it was not a real cat. That would be cruel!

It was a great day and so much fun to spend time with my host family. And yes, of course we enjoyed fika in the middle of ...
Sundsvall, Midnight Sun Coast, Sweden meluebke... with autism. I was only able to go to this school because I have worked with some autistic students in my mom's classroom. Thanks for the experience, Mom! The 7 of us played games with the students, taught them sign language to some of our show songs, and discussed our travels. They were so attentive and eager to learn... it was such a blessing to interact with them. One girl, Karla, gave me a hug before I left and didn't want to let go!

When we returned from our community ...

Sundsvall, Midnight Sun Coast, Sweden msborje... we were happy to share with them our tradition of the American culture. The turkey in the market was a bit too costly and too frozen for us to make on Thanksgiving day so we compromised with 2 small chickens. Jana and I have never cooked a whole dinner for anyone before in our lives so we were nervous about how our impression of Thanksgiving would portray to our friends. I made a green bean casserole, but when I went to start it we had no cream of ...
Sundsvall, Midnight Sun Coast, Sweden msborje... after looking for half an hour, i forget how much harder it is to find something when it's not in english. :) So we improvised with our cookies and did what we could. they came out as a very gooey tecture but we were pretty proud of ourselves for what we were able to compromise with. The recipe asked for chocolate chips, but they didn't have any dark chocolate chips for jana's lactose allergy, so we bought a dark chocolate bar and smashed it up for ...
Sundsvall, Midnight Sun Coast, Sweden msborjeThis weekend has been the most fulfilling weekend yet since I have been in Sweden. The gorgeous weather both Saturday and Sunday might have influenced my optimism of it all. But it all began Friday with the excitement of some friends from Stockholm coming to Sundsvall to visit me and other friends here. I met sofia and sara in Green river community College when they made the decision to study abroad there along with 6 other Swedish students. Sofia met up with me and ...
Sundsvall, Sweden msborjeLeif and I celebrated three years of being together on September 10th. He had a gorgeous bouqet of flowers sent to me at my apartment. With the flowers he had a wonderful card that brought tears to my eyes. I also received 2 cards from Mom today so it was a very special day where I felt really loved. I love having people to love and who love me so much!!
Sundsvall, Sweden msborje... the only announcement of the train's arrival was made 20 minutes prior to arriving in the station. The Swedish train was, however, 1 hour late, unlike the Russian trains, which run amazingly on time. Of course the Swedish trains lacked random people in the compartment sharing stories about the merits of the "old system" and their homemade food, so I guess both railways have their advantages :-)
