Out of the widow Bahrain looks like lots of dust with skyscrapers on. Inside it is a strange mix of Christmas decorations lots of tour groups who look like they might be going on pilgramage, 25k rolexes in duty free, mcdonalds, costa and free internet to keep us amused. We've got 2hrs to kill - body clocks already out of sink! Am going to try and learn some nepalese from a podcast.
Bahrain, Bahrain paulandvicki... a camel. Later on you might see a mirage of a camel. You may have seen the outskirts of a desert town. Later you might see a mirage of the desert town.

Well, we chugged along, and at around 1:00 PM, we made an entrance into the beautiful town of Al Taif. I was a bit awed. We had just entered, it was just after mid-day and there wasnt a soul on the mainstreets. Later it reminded me of some town in Austria (minus the greenery), with the feel of hills sloping down into the ...
Al Khobar, Ash Sharqiyah, Saudi Arabia ashok_s17/10
Time to be honest. We're heading home.
The last country is a stop-over in Bahrain (for 2 hours) as we fly through the night back to England
We wanted to surprise a few folks so have sneaked home quietly.

Never the less, Bahrain International Airport looked very nice at midnight, all lit up. This small island state lies in the Persion Gulf alongside saudi ...
Manama, Bahrain paulngail... it out OK, but it would be important to keep a low-profile. This mean clothing, method of transportation, and hotels.

So I had spent the last week and a half growing a beard (or at least an attempt at one) to better blend in despite my very conspicuous blue eyes. I think it partially worked---Saad had said that I didn't look "American"---that I looked like from the northern part of the Middle East (e.g. Syrian like my friend Basma had said I could pass for before) because of my ...

Bahrain, Bahrain m_eidan... difference in what kind of wrath Allah rains down on you for drinking and finding Russian women. There were several US military guys from Kuwait on the plane here, too since cheap flights on Jazeera Airways make it a popular getaway for them. I guess the place is an oasis for everyone here in the Middle East. I'll let you know what I find on this island so check back. It may be India before I can find the internet again so I'll see you there.
Manama, Bahrain atlpilot36... some relatively ornate carved areas, and decide to get a taxi; I head over to the souq area, which is the best place I can think of to find one. The roads are really quiet, and there's no cabs. The one I see won't stop for me. Well, by now, I'm at the causeway from Muharraq to the main island and Manama proper. And, even though it's pretty hot, the prospective of sea breezes and nice views trumps standing around, waiting for a cab to wander by. So I head across the ...
Manama, Bahrain kevinwanders... was an all male Turkish bath that I definitely raised an eyebrow at as well. So I asked a taxi driver if my suspicions of more deviant activities were correct, and he confirmed it. All in all, I was glad I took my trip to Bahrain, I got to see something only a bit more authentic and furthermore, Bahrain is majority Shia, so it was interesting to see that dynamic. For a trip of a few days, I would definitely recommend it, for a trip of a lifetime, go to Dubai.
Manama, Bahrain midtowntsl0... The food hear is great there are so many different restaurants to try to, Im slowly making my way through those, also cooking up a storm in my kitchen, dinner parties are a weekly event in our apartment building. A few house parties have been had as well with the most memorable a house warming Villa party with Mexican theme, lots of Tequlia and Karkore not always a good mix! but lots of fun. We have also been trying to venture to the few different bars they have hear and ...
Manama, Bahrain kimande... tramped around for an hour with my backpacks and then gave up by going to the cafe and having some hot chocolate. In the evening i arrived at Jochens and Renatas place. They live pretty close to the center of the city so i took a stroll down there after ditching my backpacks. Jochen works as a traffic planner and he is one of those people who is lucky enough to work in the field he loves. He collects public transport tickets which occupy the ...
