    ... or face a long detour. There is a water taxi service to 'legitimately' transport pilgrims from the bank on one side to the other bank 4kms downstream. You have to phone the ferryman to arrange a mutually convenient time and he has an impressive stamp to mark the occasion in your pilgrim's passport. It was a great thrill, I can tell you.

    ... for now I'll say simply that I am well, I'm making good progess and tonight I am sleeping with four other pilgrims - including a very special one - in parish accommodation in Medesano, not far out of the city of Fidenza.

    ... even though it was very run down. It had a series of courtyards around it with boys playing cards and football set ups. The second church (Basilica Santa Maria de Campagna) was much bigger and in the centre of town. From the outside it was quite simple but they have recently restored the interior paintings so they were v vibrant.     ... tried. Betty also made sure I tried her porcini tagliatelli which was pungent and rich and earthy. Afterwards, Francesco and I shared some peach and hazelnut semifredo which was thankfully light and refreshing.

    ... freezer rooms for storage and takes me down into the basement which is vast. More food comes out - more cured pork in the form of culaccia which is perhaps even yummier than the copa earlier, Ale insists we try his baking and more caffe. we drive home as the sun rises, passing the early caffe and brioche seekers
