It's a nice change to sleep in a very COOOL room, stone walls on all sides, and (again--this is the third time we've had a room with beds for two more people than we needed) big! Just a few minutes' walk into town, and very helpful staff. I must say that one's stay in any place is always made better or worse by the hosts. Here, we thoroughly enjoyed Perihan and her adorable daughter, Nimet. Both were so enjoyable, and on our last day Nimet said, "Don't go!" and gave me kisses and a hug. They really were wonderful.

Cappadocia (pronounced Kappa-doe-kia) is one of those places on Earth that doesn't even seem real. You realize that you are indeed there in flesh, but you cannot fathom that what you are seeing exists in nature and that you are lucky enough to be there to witness it. It is home to some of the most incredible land formations that don’t even …

... that could easily be carved and hollowed out into homes, from which to farm the fertile valleys. Later, the early Christians took refuge in Cappadocia from persecution from the Roman Empire and added churches, stables and underground cities which only became more elaborate during the Byzantine era (4th to 15th centuries) when cathedrals and entire monasteries were carved within mountains. The ceilings of these churches were even painted, at first with simple works but later ...

... newly discovered city is thought to be the biggest unground city discovered to date. It is 18 stories deep and thought to be able to accommodate 30,000 people. Isn't it exciting to wonder whether there are still more underground cities yet to be discovered and how many might be forever lost or buried? The cities were dug by early christens as refuges during the winter and difficult times. During later times the shelters became protection from Roman ...
