We arrived in Göerme on the overnight bus from Antalya and checked into our cave. Göerme is a small town situated in the region of Cappadoccia where volcanoes have formed the landscape. About 150 meters of volcanic ash was deposited from hundreds of eruptions and has since been eroded away by the wind and rain over the last few million years. The landscape is unlike anywhere else in the world, with white hills and valleys (ash), and the unique erosional features- tall pointed freestanding roc...
Göreme, Cappadocia, Turkey dave_carolHello from Cappadocia! DAY 1: Wednesday morning we woke up to our last delicious breakfast at Anzac Golden Pension in Kusadasi. After packing our belongings we were ready to take off, once again having to navigate the extremely narrow and bumpy streets. This time however, we made it pretty much unscathed until getting a little confused when trying to return the rental car at the airport in Izmir. Apparently here they like to meet you at the terminal entrance to get the car from you. Quite nic...

Üçhisar, Nevşehir, Turkey silo... us, until we asked. When we are checking out at the bar, someone came up behind us and gave us a big strong bear hug at the same time. Who in the World would know us well enough to do that...in Turkey? It was Richard Gere! His brother owned the restaurant and he was there with one of his Asian guests. That night we learned he likes to "entertain" some of his guests by taking them out on dates and also that he has a horse that is the color of his hair...gray. What a ...

Goreme, Cappadocia, Turkey richardcowley... had to be the food again! The show wasn't bad. We saw a lot of different dances and they were wearing nice costumes. I quite liked the music. I did splurged and treated myself there. I had been told that Cappadocia is one of the best places in the world to go on a hot air balloon and since I had skipped it several times I decided to go this time. So I got up at 5am and got pick up at 5h30am. Luckily the weather was great that morning. I only felt cold ...

Istanbul, Turkey ashbyers... around amongst the fairy chimneys. On the way home, however, things took a rather unpleasant turn. Think windy, cobbled, steep road and large tourist coach. The body of the scooter did not make actual contact with the ground but I'm sure the tourists in the coach enjoyed a display of non-precision driving. Lucky I was wearing brown pants. Our next adventure was a hot air balloon ride over the Goreme ...
Goreme, Turkey christineatkins... The other night we found ourselves sitting in a bar in town 'just for one'. Four hours later we were still there, smoking spiced tobacco from a luxurious brass waterpipe with the locals and getting up to dance Turkish dances as and when they demanded. Turkish dancing seems to involve mincing around with your feet whilst holding your arms aloft, gyrating your midriff and grinning from ear to ear. The Turks are fantastic at it but my attempts just looked like a tacky advert for ...
