Arrival in Cappadocia
After our midnight dinner on the bus (we ate, they washed the bus!), we found ourselves in another ghost town at 5am in the morning (thought this one was inhabited, merely asleep). Göreme, at the center of Cappadocia, was deserted but for a drunken Australian and a man with a good suggestion: "Why don't you go hot air balloon now?" Fortunately …
The "Green Tour"
For Saturday, we decided to take the "Green Tour", which meant we would be picked up in a minibus and driven to several sites that we otherwise probably wouldn't have seen. At breakfast Mike and Denise (also staying at our hotel, the Elif Star Caves) joined us, and then as we arrived at the travel agency to pick up others, we found Chris, the …
Flintstones
In with the flintstones. Living in bedrock for the next few days. Excited to explore this amazing landscape of Cappadocia. Arrived at Star Cave hotel at 6:30am in Goreme, everyones sleeping. I waited around till one guy got up to prepare breakfast. I ended up in the kitchen with him helping out. Cutting and peeling cucumbers, melons. Learning how …
Surreal landscapes
Up by 8:00am for breakfast to get first dibs on the buffet. Once its gone its gone. Another all day tour which I enjoyed. Fairy chimneys and surreal landscapes. It's like being on a different planet. Invited into a local fairy chimney home. What a life to be born and raised in one of these homes. The name fairy chimneys came from fairys occupying …

About 150 meters of volcanic ash was deposited from hundreds of eruptions and has since been eroded away by the wind and rain over the last few million years. The …

TravelPod Member ReviewsElif Star Caves Goreme
It's a nice change to sleep in a very COOOL room, stone walls on all sides, and (again--this is the third time we've had a room with beds for two more people than we needed) big! Just a few minutes' walk into town, and very helpful staff. I must say that one's stay in any place is always made better or worse by the hosts. Here, we thoroughly enjoyed Perihan and her adorable daughter, Nimet. Both were so enjoyable, and on our last day Nimet said, "Don't go!" and gave me kisses and a hug. They really were wonderful.
