I took a 4 hour bus ride to Riga, Latvia, where I'm writing from
now. Yet again, it was a blizzard outside on APRIL 8TH so I rather
enjoyed relaxing in my hostel room away from the cold. I woke up the
next morning and took a 3 hour walking tour of Riga. It was nice, but
not too impressive. I am having trouble putting my finger on what the
culture of Riga is like, but even after walking ...
... housed in giant buildings that used to be Zeppelin Hangers. There seemed to be a different hanger for different produce, i.e. one for meat, one for cheese, one for fish etc. Walking a little further on from the markets I came across the Latvian Academy of Sciences, a building built during the Soviet era and whose design resembles the seven sisters in Moscow, indeed a local nickname for the building is “Stalin’s Birthday Cake”.
We have arrived in Riga, Lithuania
After leaving Tallinn around midday, we drove south to Halinga - where we stopped for lunch. We continued to Pamu, then went through the abandoned Estonia/Lithuania border crossing. We then followed the Gulf of Riga coast, passed the kite surfers, arriving at Riga around 5pm.
We are now back from having a really nice dinner with the tour group - got to love dining at ...
... alcoholic beggars getting into it over some thing or another. Feels like we never left Footscray!
The next couple of days have gone by reasonably quick. I have had to spend some time at the bank and also meeting with the people looking after the day to day administering of the block of land over here'
