... plague most developing-world beach dogs. Since we didn't really have an itinerary ahead of time, I hadn't told her we were coming and I had no idea where she lived except "Cabrera." The town was not the tiny place that we had expected, so we thought we'd have no chance of finding her - but apparently expats can't hide as easily as they may sometimes wish! We had an awesome lunch (where I learned that they only use the term "habichuelas" for beans ...
Río San Juan, María Trinidad Sánchez, Dominican Republic jesshiggins... can afford. As soon as you walk into the reception area, you get a grand view of the ocean, with tables set on a patio in the open air. The terrace below literally juts out over the water, and the waves (tiny as they are) break against the building. A broad outdoor spiral staircase leads to three levels, all with wide balconies facing the water. The hotel has seen some wear and tear, but it's truly beautiful ...

El Parque Nacional Con Haitses, Samaná, Dominican Republic carlosjeremy... Brigada Verde meeting that was very inspirational. I hope to plan a couple of charlas in celebration of Earth Day, April 22, 2009. Finally, I'm waiting on approval for grant money for the stove projects, but when that happens, I'll be in a new direction there too. Okay, I promise to write more later, but I just wanted to give you all a taste of what's going on in Samana. Sincerely, Jennifer
Samana, Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... tons of Italian & French restaurants and boutiques. And every menu is in: Spanish, French, Italian and English. Thankfully, the skies started to clear some on Saturday morning for our drive to Samaná to go whale-watching. I totally felt the favor of God over us that whole day. The taxi was way more than we expected to pay, but it was so worth it because our driver, Eddy, was really cool and ...
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic aprilreneeWednesday-Thursday, January 23-24, 2008 Samana Peninsula Dear Readers: Two full and somewhat stressful days on the Peninsula begin with the shocking news that there was confusion with our hotel booking, and our destination was completely full when we arrived. Quick scrambling lands us in a different beachfront resort with one fewer star on its entrance. The only plus is that it is a short walk from one of the three towns on ...
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic wareameye... incognito!) and two got pregnant. Several of us got sick and several of us didn´t. Several of us had great successes and some of us had little ones. Some built libraries and acuaducts, and some got kids their birth certificates so they could attend school. Did we save the world? Maybe not, but I can´t say that we didn´t at least make it a little better.... I have to admit it was a bit difficult being there and trying to think of what we were going to be ...
Pimentel, Dominican Republic lisalew... Anyway, at lunchtime, my friend Tilden tried calling the phone again and about the 20th time she tried it, somebody picked up! It was a Dominican man saying that he had my cell phone and he would be across the street from a large car dealership on the other side of town until 1pm. Even though it was already 12:15, Tilden and I hopped into a gua-gua (the public transportation of the DR) and get there as fast as we can. But, when we get there ...
Palo Verde, Dominican Republic molly... courts around 8:15 to clean the courts and await the arrival of our donated water. (We had previously solicited 5 jugs of water from a local vendor and she agreed to not only donate them, but deliver them to the courts at 8:30am). So we busted out the brooms and started sweeping the courts, while a small army of 4-7 year old boys in various colored briefs soaked up looming puddles with scraps of sponge. It was actually quite a site to see these ...
Nagua, Dominican Republic bradleyhaas... food. I think something was wrong with the potatoes. Oh well, you live and learn. There was a bachata dancing contest and a talent show. It was nice and I think most of the volunteers needed this. I was so tired from the day that I went home and went to bed. The next day was the all volunteers conference and that was exciting. It was wonderful to get to meet all the new volunteers and go to various workshops to see what has been working for some and not ...
