Campfire & Wine

... headed over to their campsite next to us. The conversation went on for hours and so did the campfire, and just when we were running out of wood, another camper came along with more firewood and more wine.. I will continue this entry later, it seems like there will be another campfire this evening..

... Lake where the Snake River is dammed to enjoy some more quiet reading time. After getting back to our campsite, Andrew received a voicemail from our real estate company in Portland, letting us know that the apartment we had secured had flooded and was uninhabitable. We scrambled through dinner and then headed back to Jackson to use the internet at the most fantastic honkey tonk pub we have ever seen (over a dozen elk heads ...

... gateway of Yellowstone called Mammoth Hot Springs. This provided us with amazing views and very windy roads. Here we did some paved and flat walks called the upper and lower terraces that brought us to highlights such as Minerva's Pool. After that we headed south to Norris campground, as all the northern and higher altitude campgrounds were closed due to snowfall.

After a very cold night in ...

The Road to Jackson via Utah/ Yellowstone, etc

... the river. Chalk another state up.. Got back to Jackson around 6. Great day- long one for me driving- ended up driving for close to 12 hours. Tired. We went to a Mexican place for dinner that was ok - not great but decent. We walked around for a while after this in the square and some shops, picked up Jenny a t-shirt and I got some ice cream before hitting the sack for the night before a long day of driving tomorrow.

Boiling Mud, Mums and Moose

... ungainly, skittish creature. We learned that they mostly like the wetlands which might account for their obvious inability to walk properly. Running is even more ridiculous. And unlike our friendly bison, these things took off at the first sign of the car. Dispite their obvious physical impairment, they did seem to move quickly - too quickly to dig out a camera and take anything but a fuzzy shot in the distance. Jackson was larger than expected ...

But it was on time!

By the time I left Yellowstone it was nearly dark and I still had about an hours drive to Jackson and arrived there around 9pm. Next to Yellowstone is Grand Teton national park which I will check out more tomorrow. The first night in Jackson was a quiet one, I went to a nearby Mexican ...

Hiking to Lake Solitude

... and camped in this area. It was truly beautiful. We decided that we WILL come back and backpack this trail. The crowds thinned out once we passed the forks. We came upon a sign that said Lake Solitude 0.5 miles, walked another 50 yards and a second sign said Lake Solitude 200 yards...go figure. We were happy to see the second sign! We walked around the bend and there it was! I have tried so many times to reach Lake Solitude but for one reason or another have been ...

Rest Day

... the next, (and would have kept looking if it was sold out at the second store). We had ordered sandwiches and had a little picnic lunch at a lake. Things were going well until Isabel decided she wanted to eat too. I ended up eating lunch with Sophie, again, while Melissa and Isabel went to the air conditioned car for their lunch. We were going to go to the elk refuge next, but on the way from the park to our hotel, we saw a herd of ...

... just that, and more than once. We all got wet, some of us got sunburned, some got sore from paddling, but we all had a great time. Oh, I forgot to tell you that this was an adults-only ride. Mom and Dad took the four children on an excursion to "The Park" where Samuel and Jacob both got yet another set of credentials as Junior Rangers. We all met back at the hotel, went swimming, then dinner. After dinner we all piled into two cars to head out to an ...
