A mixture of many destinations!!!
My next trip is going to be in Cyprus - the Island I was born and brought up.
It will be a blog dedicated just to this island!
... the empire, Constantine the XI was crowned here in 1449 before the fall to the Ottomans in 1453. The churches have intact frescos and the 3 walls keep out the invading barbarians.
Our next town was another mideval seaside village Monemvasia. It is a walled village with 26 churchs and only 8 inhabitants. It sits on a island which became seperated from the mainland in the earthquakes of 345 CE and is connected only by a narrow causeway. This makes it especially protected from invaders ...
... happily. The day is spent mostly out in nature.
We visited the beautiful beach of KORASIDA in EVIA today. I wish I had taken my swimming suit along. Two or three people were swimming, although they admitted that the waters were cold !!!
I picked wild flowers and made our wreath which later on I hanged on the door of our house as the tradition says !!!
The fields were filled with all sorts of wild flowers and mostly popies.
... what I was looking at. The most impressive to me were the tholos (circular chamber-type) tombs. You can still walk inside these structures, which used to house the royal remains of Aegisthus, Klyemnestra and Agamemnon. Back in Nafplio, I took the steep climb up 890-plus stone steps to the 216-metre summit of the Palamidhi fortress. The view from the top of this fortress was absolutely breath-taking! After I climbed back down, I rewarded myself with a ...
Peloponnese, Greece canadianjulie... other guests. From Syros, I decided to take a long ferry ride over to Rhodes in the Dodecanese Islands. Rhodes interested me because it has a part of town (aptly called the Old Town) that is completely enclosed by a wall. When I arrived in Rhodes Town, I was met at the port by a friendly woman who was ready to give me a place to stay, at a price. We negotiated after I got a free ride into Old Town and I decided to stay there for my next two ...
Dodecanese, Greece broncos... The museum had trophies from famous Greek runners including one from a guy that won Boston and many other top marathons in the 1950's. Each Olympic marathon had a cool exhibit with details of the race including top finishers and a description of how the race unfolded. The museum was small but the information nicely presented. They didn't have that much in the way of souveniers but I picked up a couple of things. Maria was so ...
Marathon, Attica, Greece rnriggins... Hydra was one of most beautiful island amongst the three. Finally, Aegina - the place where pistachios were grown. Their pistachios, unlike the ones we get at home, are more sour in taste and tinier in size. It was in Aegina that we got the 2nd chance to taste ouzo again with ...
Saronic Gulf Islands, Greece ikanbilis... site was mentioned by Homer in his epic poem "Iliad and the Odyssey" - "Well-built Mycenae, rich in gold!" We witnessed the famous Lion Gate (the lions were carved above the lintel). We also visited the Grave of the ancient kings. We were told that there's a secret stairway (of 99 steps) to a cistern beneath the citadel!! A pity we did not have sufficient time to explore ...

It is said that the eco-tourists who are keen of bird watching have discovered a unique bird paradise since the area here has recorded 210 species of birds. We are told that 70 of these nesting locally.
We make a few stops to rest and have some water. We carry light snacks with us as well.
As we get near the end of the trip the walk gets more interesting because we meet the river below. Crystal clear waters, and suddenly we see a woman bathing, enjoying her ...
