Kalmar has been a delightful surprise, a lovely town with it's greatest claim to fame being Kalmar Castle, which has been around in some shape or form since 1180. In 1397 the Kalmar Union was signed inside the castle, the Union was the first formal agreement between, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. It was initiated by Queen Margaret whose intention was to ...

The Kronan or Crown, suffered a terrible fate on June 1st 1676 when she tacked too quickly whilst participating in the Battle of Öland against a combined Dutch / Danish fleet, tacking too quickly in that she was carrying too much sail and capsized. ... than a return visit to the glassblower, who was there now and busy making some simple pieces, we may come back again when he is doing something more complex. That and a visit on board our neighbour’ s boat – they came in late yesterday having motored for 15 hours from Västervik. It was 'Freya of Mersey’, belonging to Tony and Louise Halliwell. They keep Freya in Fehmarn too and we last spent time with them during the 2012 Rally in ...

... castle. As we had visited the castle in the company of Jeff and Greta Layton on 26th May 2012 (see blog) we’d decided that it would be a better use of our time if we did boat-stuff, cleaning, maintenance and the like. One rather worrying result of my boat maintenance was that I found that the gearbox’s oil level had dropped. There is a dipstick for the gearbox and I check the level every week to ten days and not once, in ...
