Kamari Santorini, Cyclades, Greece
... a little early but had some great entertainment from a small dog trying to hump a big dog without much success! Pretty persistent little thing though!!

So to the Sunset.... Yep it definately lived up to all the hype! yellow turned into orange then into pink, then into red and the sun disappeared below the ocean leaving a purple haze. Rounds of applause and cheers erupted from the breathless crowd (if that can actally happen?!).

To finish the day off on a mega ...
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece markandnoma2009Well, a very enjoyable last night in Santorini. had dinner at a lovely restaurant overlooking the sunset strip. Pity it wasn't the clearest of nights but still spectacular.
Dinner consisted of grilled pork with pureed red pepper and potatoes with cheese and Souvlaki Lamb with baked potato.
A 5.00 am start got us on to the flight to Athens then Rome.
Oia, Cyclades, Greece corny15After a sleep in we wandered into town to choose a suitable location for our anniversary dinner tonight (21 years!).
As usual we just had to take more photos ~ don't worry, after a few more tonight this will be all of Santorini.
Next, Italy where the forecast is 0 to 14 degrees. Oia, Cyclades, Greece corny15... route there along the east coast of the island. I took a turn driving the ATV and had a blast! Then we stopped in Oia and had a look around. The views are awesome and the little village, perched on the hill, is filled with white buildings and hidden staircases. We headed back to Fiora and managed to walk down without getting run over by a donkey.
Corfu was nice as well but as Steve said, very different. It was very green and the sandybeaches were some of the ...
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece steveandwhitney... baths, ancient iron utensils, knives, fish hooks, wall paintings, etc discovered at the dig site of Akrotiri on the island....Akrotiri is a town similar to Pompeii, in that it was covered in thick ash from an enormous volcanic eruption around 1500 BC, when the island was reshaped to be as we see it today.....half the original island blew up & then subsided into the sea, creating the rim of the caldera that now exists...it is ...
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece oz09... all changed in 1650 BC when there was a massive eruption and the center (crater) of the island sank into the ocean taking early civilizations along with it. Other explosions led to the smaller islands surrounding Santorini.

Once on the island we hopped a bus which took us to Fira, the main city on Santorini. From there we hopped on another bus to Oia where we’re staying. It’s supposed to ...
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece claraz8... Surronding all of this is pure, sky-blue water. My first day in Santorini I explored a little and caught up on sleep. On my second day I took an all day boat tour of the islands, visiting the volcano, ancient Thirasia and watching a gorgeous sunset in Oea. Tomorrow morning I leave for Ios, then possibly one more island before I head back to Athens to catch a bus to Corfu.
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece nickgoldenson... they had put a roof over it, but I think the roof collapsed, so they’re trying to fix that, so it’s closed. But it might be the ancient Atlantis society – it’s possible. Also possible is that in the caldera, which is incredibly deep, so the city might be there. They’ve never gone down far enough so determine for sure. Actually the last day there, as we were taking the bus to the port, one of the people from the hostel told us how a cruise ship sank about ...
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece twhitesell... quite comical. We toured them to all the sites we had explored the previous day and then called it a day. Day 3 we dropped them off in Ia while Henry and I navigated the stairs and donkeys down to the ferries for a day trip to Santorini's volcanic caldera. We had a full day on the sea and hiking the crater and another island. We met up with Chad & Jackie in Ia for supper and to enjoy the world famous, not to be missed sunset.
Santorini, Cyclades, Greece travelmenu... Clothing from the required "I was here" tee shirt to the height of Armani elegance. The only let-up was that every third shop was a café or restaurant. A well-mannered dog lay basking in the sun outside every store entrance and would give a quick tail-wag salute when spoken to.

In Oia, as with Thera, a patron at a café does not buy a cup of coffee or a light snack. Rather, one rents a seat for the view. And the view is sensational, looking out over the ...
