Yesterday we arrived into Ignalina, NE from Vilnius in the Lithuanian lake district. We had tried to find out about accommodation in advance, asking our hostel hosts, and looking at the internet, but had not found anything very definite, apart from a hotel offering a double room at €47, which is rather more than we've budgeted. We tried the tourist office, but it was shut. Outside they had a helpful rack of leaflets, including guest houses ...

... whisky, wine and cranberry juice. And we tried to go round the table and "give thanks", even though none of the Americans present had ever really done that before with their families. After dinner, we played a hilarious game of "Who Am I", in which the easiest riddles were solved with lucky guesses, while the simplest mysteries remained a mystery (seriously, who would ever guess Mary Poppins???).

Oh, and there were a lot of interesting stories and some bragging ...

... to plonk itself down and proceeded to eat us out of house and home!

Vilnius is now only 160 kms so we are going to head there next, then on to Poland, Germany and the Hoek of Holland to get the ferry.
The weather has been wet and grey since leaving Mongolia on 5th August and it's raining now. Still good practice for coming home.!!

Latvia and Lithuania are very much worth a visit.
