Good second impressions in Bogota

... and some lovely one-offs for European 19th and 20th century masters.
- The Zona Rossa has a great night life: salsa clubs (great for celebrating 60th birthdays!), pubs with real ale to satisfy all tastes, and some lovely restaurants.

Although obviously a city to watch your purse closely - and leave your camera at home! - Bogota concluded the positive impression I had of Colombia as a place to visit. I love this country - and I was sad to leave after only a short visit...

Day69 - Bogota - Tickets, What Tickets?

... our tickets. He then reluctantly gave back our tickets and disappeared off the bus. The door closed and I looked out of the window as the bus then pulled out to continue its journey. I saw, what appeared to be, a line of not 3 but about 10 people waiting for an imaginary bus. I could only think that this was some kind of standby system where people took up spare seats on buses as they pulled in. I have got no idea why there was confusion with our tickets.

Crap Coffee in Colombia!!!

... the taxi to drop us off. All the drivers in Colombia seem to be crazy!

From Manizales we went on a day trip to the Sierra Nevada NP where we climbed up to the top of the volcano and had a snow ball fight on the glacier at 5125 meters above sea level. Unfortunately our guide did not speak English so we did not learn anything about the area but were able to appreciate its beauty. The following day we went to visit a coffee plantation. This place resembled what you ...

Losing my mind

I have been on the bus for over 20 hours now and I just arrived into Bogota, Colombia. I was planning on staying in the city for a day or two before continuing north to Venezuela... but I have changed my mind and am doing something stupid! Just like in Lima, Peru I am thinking "I have been here and done that." I already ...

Bogota, Bogota, I love you

... due to meet is in the north of the city and is called the Zona Rosa. It is full of up-market restaurants and bars. The clientelle were very well-healed group and the area had chic to rival most European capitals, certainly enough to comfotably outstrip Dublin. We poor backpackers opted to sit outside an off-license and share a bottle of cheap vodka. We retired early. The following day I think I sat around the hostel and took advantage of their DVD collection. But that night was the ...

Narrowly missed being shot...damn!

... On my table was a 20 year old who had been here for 2.5 months teaching business English (and hadn´t learnt ANY Spanish - ****!!!) and a 55 year old local lady, also an extra, who only spoke Spanish. Needless to say, apart from inquiring how much it pays (1.2m almost tax free for a 35h-week...) i ignored him and spent the 5 hours practicing my Spanish. Basically time well spent, as we got into a heated debated about religion (well, a monologue ...

Bogota

... we walked back past the Church of San Diego, built in the 19th Century out in the farmland, today it is surrounded by several skyscrapers. One of these was the 48 storey block which we were able to get to the top to see the panoramic view all the way round; this was good because it was a nice clear day. It was then back down and a walk towards the centre itself, at one stage we passed 3 churches right next to each other, one called St Francis had a very ...

La complainte de Bogotá / A tale of Bogotá

... I took everything out of my bags to better pack them, and after a nice evening with people from all over the world I crashed into bed for a much-needed rest... I learned later that that very evening, rain was pouring on Quito (which runway, one off the shortest in the world, was slippery as hell), the town was shrouded in clouds, and the nearby volcano had just erupted, throwing puffs of ashes in the air. I guess it explains quite a few things... :)
