Historical Traveler Reviews of Eden Mar Funchal
A 5-star hotel in all but name
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is superb. Every part of it is quality. The staff, food, rooms, facilities, location and ambience. We upgraded to a suite for less than £100 for the week and it was sumptuous. Our own south facing balcony - 2 TVs - What must a 5-star be like ?
The gym was great - two jacuzzis, top class masseuse and the food - well worth the 3 kgs extra we took home. It's location and aspect are second to none and I can find nothing at all to criticise.
SUPERB
Our first trip to madeira
from A TripAdvisor Member
We went to Madeira for the first time this year 2005, It was our 25th wedding anniversary and we booked into the eden mar after reading the reviews that people had written, we were not dissappointed, we had champagne and flowers waiting for us in our room when we got there. The accomodation was out of this world, kingsize bed comfortable sitting area and kitchen. The hotel food you could not fault and this hotel should be 5 star. The staff were always polite and willing to help, could not have wished for better.

I visited Madeira for the first time in the Summer last year. When we arrived at the main entrance to the Eden Mar my first thoughts were "what have I let myself in for here", it was so small and insignificant. I was fooled for only the time it took me and my wife to walk through this confusing 4 star hotel entrance into the reception area where we were greeted by first class hospitality. In the centre of the reception area stood a magnificent floral display which set the standard for the rest of the hotel. I have stayed in many 4 star holiday resort hotels which if were city hotels would be classed as 3 star. Not this one, infact, as a resort hotel, both my wife and I thought a 5 star would be more appropriate. Our room was twice the size as many I have had and beautifully furnished in dark wood, with an extra large bed, dressing table, writing table and chair, sofa and coffee table, good sized wardrobes with a safe, a large veranda complete with table and chairs looking straight out over the Atlantic Ocean. When entering the room on one side there is the fully equipped bathroom which included bidet and double washbasins with piped sound from your in room TV, then on the other side was a set of 4 folding doors, which when opened turned out to be a fully equipped kitchen including full size refrigerator which was more than welcome.
Then there was sumptuous public areas, beautiful tropical garden, fantastic pool areas (inside and out) fully equipped gym, beauty and massage parlour great TV room for the football and on and on and on. Got to stop somewhere. The only negative as far as we were concerned was we found the staff serving breakfast on the terrace to be lazy unhelpful and miserable. This did not spoil a thing though, and when we did have a problem, which was the air conditioning, the hotel staff fell over themselves to have it corrected. Once they realised that it could not be immediately repaired they up-graded us to a suite and gave us a voucher for dinner in the hotel restaurant. What more can I say, DON'T MISS IT.

Best holiday ever

We went on a thomson price breaker and ended up in this hotel. This was the best hotel we have ever stayed in. It is ideally located in the hotel district, two minutes walk from the supermarket and the lido. As this hotel is part of the villa porto mare complex a huge courtesy bus ran into funchal on weekdays. The rooms are huge and beautiful, all with a sea and pool view. Bathrobes, pool towels, toiletries are all supplied. Rooms are cleaned every day and beds changed every two days. Communal areas are fab, there are two outdoor and two indoor pools which are all beautifully maintained. There is also a shaded garden area for shade seakers. Staff are all friendly, especially Ricardo! As far as eating out goes, we recommend solar da ajuda as the food is delicious (try the steak on the stone) and the staff are lovely, they also offer a children's menu and cater for all tastes. Madeira is a beautiful island but this hotel makes a nice holiday a brilliant holiday. In all rooms there are kitchen facilities, good for a cup of tea at the end of the night.
Seventh visit
from A TripAdvisor Member
We have visited Madeira and stayed at the Eden Mar on six occasions and are now preparing to visit again. We have always found the hotel to be comfortable, clean and the food excellent. The staff have always been most helpful, kind and welcoming. It is a measure of the good management that we have seen the same faces over the seven years we have been visiting. The quality of the accomodation and service remains constantly high and we just love to return year after year, it is like a second home and family.

Simply excellent!

Stayed at this hotel in Oct 2003 after being "bumped" due to overbooking at the Porto Santa Maria. I'm delighted that we were. The suites are simply superb having just been refurbished,- well equipped and very clean. Great friendly staff and an excellent location out of the main hustle and bustle. Not really for families, more for the quieter holiday.
Holiday with my wife & father

All rooms have a sea view, and are suites with a seperate lounge/dining area and kitchen. We particularly liked the "his 'n hers" washbasins in the bathroom. You control the temperature of the room yourself, and there are two patio doors onto the balcony. My fathers suite was the same as ours, but looked out completely to the sea. Both siutes were very clean, staff very friendly. try the local food, it is different, Black scabbard fish is superb. The new complex next door will soon be finished when you will have a choice of 2 indoor, 2 outdoor pools, spa pool sauna etc plus 4 dining rooms. The climate is excellent, with mild temperatures of about 70F. However it will rain some of the holiday, the island would not be so green otherwise. Hire a taxi for the day to see the island, and have a sail on the replica of the Santa Maria, the is AMAZING!
Great Holiday.

My husband and myself are just back from a two week holiday in Madeira staying at the Suite Hotel Eden Mar and we cant praise this lovely hotel enough. The rooms were kept spotlessly clean and we were left new towels every day including extra ones to use at the pool also shampoo, soap and facecloths. Every evening around 6pm a couple of staff members would come to our room and leave sweets with a little card attached wishing us to have a lovely evening which we thought was a nice personal touch. We discovered a little Restaurant in the complex at the side of the hotel called O' CHEFE where we each had a main course with a side salad and a couple of drinks for around 26 euros, The chicken breast in pepper sauce and the beef strogonoff were two of our favourites. We hope to go back to madeira again and when we do we certainly be booking into the Eden Mar Hotel again. Gwen and Mark Mcintyre. Belfast. N.IRELAND.
Lovely hotel

We stayed at the Eden Mar Suite hotel in October
2000. The rooms are lovely with the advantage of cooking facilities & a fridge, very useful for a cup of tea in the morning and cold drinks when needed. Supermarket 2 minutes down the road selling a good variety. Weather lovely and hot, lovely and peaceful for sunbathing around the pool. Also nice indoor pool.
We had all meals outside, which was an added bonus. Plenty of lovely restaurants near by. Taxi's are very cheap for a trip into funchal or even a day out (arrange a cost before you leave)
Hopefully we will visit Madeira again one day and stay at the Eden mar.
