We arrange for Monica to give us a tour of the painted monasteries. She is trained as a tour guide. Public transportation to these remote sites is very limited and would take several days to see the top 4. We take a beautiful route through the hills. The monasteries are surrounded by farms. We visit Voronet, Moldovita, Suceavita, Humur. They were built around 1500 with their exterior walls decorated in extensive and ...
Suceava, Romania will.traveller... only other person at the hostel is a 60 year old Korean housewife, not what I had expected in a remote area of Romania. Suceava has virtually nothing in historical or cultural stuff to see and no nightlife. The reason to come here is as a launching pad for the painted monasteries.
We find an excellent restaurant just down the street from the hostel. In all, I would say that Romania has actually been the most consistently good food of any country so far. Another surprise.

Gura Humorului was our starting point for our visit throughout the Bucovina region of Romania, where we visited some of the most famous painted monasteries in this region. Starting in the second half of the 15th century, and continuing for more than a century, the princes of Moldavia would built monasteries in this region, many of which are fortified and have tiny churches in the middle, which ...
Gura Humorului, Romania tavini... own comments. Chad sure did. Sidenote: Leaving Voronet, I had just gotten into the car when all of a sudden an old man was standing RIGHT outside my window, which I ignored until Chad piped up with the helpful information "Ummm...I think that guy is trying to show you his dingle." Which he very well might have been. I burst out laughing and Chad backed the car out. Quickly. (C) I am sure it's NO coincidence that they scarlet lade is ALSO the ...
Voronets, Romania gr8escape... to Jesse - the father of David. Emphasis is placed on the royal lineage of Jesus. Joseph is barely featured (well, virgin birth, I guess he didn't do much (sorry folks - couldn't help myself; I'll do my penance in the morning)). Although John the Baptist is frequently featured on the left of Jesus (Mary on the right). Some of the monasteries were neglected for long periods of time (when trying to stamp out the local religious believes). 500 years of weather has taken a ...
Suceava, Romania nkohare... They are the future of Romania and the future appears to be in very capable hands. Many dream of coming to America as well and with Romania's recent entry into the European Union, that dream will be realized sooner rather than later. I am also ready for American food again and can't wait for a Pepsi with ice and some barbecue. You don't drink the water or ice here and there is not a barbecue shack for 5000 miles in any direction. The title today is "A Final ...
Botosani, Romania mshields007... for a cheap, yet enormous shaorma (that was actually kind of nasty), I was on my way out of town. Getting back to Suceava was a cinch, even despite the fact that I never figured out where Botosani's bus station is. All I had to do instead was walk back up to where I'd arrived, follow the road out to the edge of town and then start hitchhiking. Actually, I didn't even get to the latter, because a guy waiting there asked me where I was going and then herded me into a share-taxi with a few ...
Suceava, Romania xerius... see the main attractions while the conditions are favorable. In any case, I'll be able to trump the last pictures I took out this way. Undoubtedly the biggest draw of the region - and really my main reason for coming up here again - is the painted monasteries of Sucevita, Moldovita, Voronet, Humor and Putna. Well, Putna isn't actually painted on the outside, but it still dates from the same period. And, truthfully, there are two other painted monasteries at ...
Suceava, Romania xerius... At the next stop, Moisei we had a bit of a disaster - our digital camera broke and although we are hoping we don't lose any pictures we won't be able to take any more until we get it fixed or replaced.....damn!!! The next town Borsa was a bit bigger but still had a lovely river flowing through it - our hotel was still being built though and so come the morning we had no water!!! From there we hitched a lift with Ad & Dinica, a ...
