... technique used in Lecce, a small figurine can take 25 days to make. I found a fabulous shop (not a tourist shop) with really interesting papier mache figurines. I would have like to buy one but in true Italian style, the shop was closed for siesta. Everything closing for 2 to 3 hours in the middle of the day is a pain in the **** when you are only visiting a city/town for the day. This doesn't happen in the big cities (Rome, Venice etc) but Lecce ...

... shut, not yet June. Climbed the (rebuilt and improved ) defensive wallls and walked through the narrow streets. While not June, starting to see school groups and more tourists around. A sunny day with a gentle breeze, definintely spring.

Looked for the Laghetto di bauxite, and while well described on the tourist brochure, no information on how to get there. Tried TT, our road map, local signs......nothing. Gave up.

... majority of the towns, there was barely a hotel open. Many of the hotels obviously hadn't been open for a while, inspite of their advertising along the road. Where there was the odd hotel open, the town struggled to have an eatery that might be open in the evening.

While not getting desperate, were quite relieved when we discovered Hotel dei Bizantini, just outside Campo dei Messapi.
