... most of the Col de Croix Fer not to be confused with Day Two's Croix Fre. This road had a lot of traffic and cyclists so you had to be on your toes. Fortunately the drivers are friendly to cyclists.

Pretty soon our route turned off to the left and now the road was much less busy. The Croix Fer winded around the mountainside and offered some amazing views. This was a pretty tough hill because the pitch kept changing rather than staying steady.

We did a ...

... up the side of the mountain. It is only about 2 miles long but it is very narrow with 18 switchbacks. Unfortunately the French police had different plans. Because this road is so narrow I assume they did not want a lot of fans on the side of this section so they had the road closed. Our trip leader, Peter, had scouted this route the day before and told us this was a possibility. He did have a back-up plan so we took the alternate route. ... The day was only ½ done so back on the
bike we climbed. During this ride the weather was clear, sunny and very hot for
the Alps. Avg temperatures were in the low 90s. Thankfully the humidity was
low. It was much better than riding in Austin in July and August. I tried to
stay focused on drinking and eating a lot throughout the day.

Our next climb, the Col des Aravia was short, only a few
miles, with an average incline of 3%. Our joke was that 3% ...

... and then straight into the first climb Col du Chaussy. Within the first km I had a bloody flat....I reckon I scored the first puncture on this year's Etape.

Up and over the first climb and I knew I was going to have a tough day. There were still 3 big climbs left and already the sun was blazing and the temp rising. After 60kms we then hit the foot of Col du Glandon, the biggest and toughest climb of the day +20kms at ...
