Another reluctant departure from Opatja but one must move on. The weather forecast was for "possible rain showers" What's new? Back on the motorways for some serious riding. ... year Italy's farmers are growing Sweetcorn....lots of them. Very good but there were fields and fields of them. There wasnt a great deal going on, the only thing of note was the studied ignorance of the lady working behind the buffet counter, she was great, she made everyone wait and remained unflustered as the queues built up. Order a drink and she'd walk away from you, after you eventually got served she would consult ...

... breathtaking views we had seen on the entire hike.

Barbara was excited to finally be in Italy. But she never dreamed she would walk to Italy! The downhill to Refugio Elisabetta was pretty easy and through yet another gorgeous valley. We arrived mid-afternoon. The name of the place made me think of my mother a bit. Wish she was here.

... was decorated very creativly with farm tools, cheese making devices, cowbells, vintage pictures, old french cabinets and such.

After dinner, the refuge hosts rolled out a player music box that she cranked, pulling a though a roll of stiff paper with holes in it. Suddenly we were listening to the Beatles "Yellow Submarine"! Everyone in the dinning room, no matter where they were from, knew it and we all began singing along.

Kinda surreal...

... they bought out candles, not to be romantic, they were running low on electricity! For the same reason we had no lights in our cramped dorm rooms, so we had to undress by headlamp. They had no wastebaskets and refused to take any trash because it was too hard for them to haul away, the location being so remote. Too add insult to injury, it was one of the most expensive refuges (about $135 for the two of us).
