More Navy Time
The weather has turned cold....I guess it is November. So, we decided to go for a drive and see some of the area inside a warm vehicle! We headed to Norfolk to see the Navy Port and for the last time see the USS Enterprise. The USS Enterprise came into port on Sunday. They are going to decommission this ship, send it off and break it down into scrap metal. Sort of a shame but what do you do with an old and probably ...
Sea Mist at Dam Neck Naval Air Station
... drive down the roads where he probably marched. The base is right off the beach, basically a few sand dunes separate the two. Up the road from here is Oceana Naval Air Station, so as you can imagine there is a lot of air traffic. Jerry is loving the F18 Hornets that fly overhead, actually I am enjoying that sound of freedom as well! We also found out that the USS Enterprise is ...
Sailing the Chesapeake
Hello Everyone,
After the storm we took two days to sail from Solomons to Norfolk with an overnight just north of the mouth of the Rappahannock River.
We have a new pocket video recording device and we are experimenting with it. The video that you find in the "photos" section below documents the trip.

Choosing the More Direct Route Homeward
... ENE at 15 to 17 knots, perfectly steady with very little variation in either speed or direction. Our direction was NW, so we were on a beam reach. As an added bonus the seas were calmer than they should have been for the brisk wind, as the preceding calm light-wind days had moderated sea conditions, and higher seas had yet to build. The result was fast passage speeds for us: we logged 431 nautical miles in the first 48 hours since raising anchor ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Econo Lodge on the Ocean Virginia Beach
Exceptional value, clean, wonderful view of ocean
I booked online after seeing this was #2 pick on Tripadvisor. The reviews were right-on! This small but exceptional motel was one of the cleanest I've stayed in. Everything worked wonderfully and our view from the 2nd floor balcony was just what we needed for a relaxing week. It just happened to be in the 80's for week we were there, and we were able to get in the ocean without freezing to death. The room was exactly as shown on line and the staff was very friendly. The rooms are super quiet - we never heard any noise except from the beach workers at 5:30 am! That was ok with me, since I got up almost every morning the watch the spectacular sun rises from the balcony. The breakfast was also very good. Nice selection of cereal, bagels, muffins, and danish. The coffee was really good + we had the coffee pot in the room if we wanted some later. I would definitely stay here again. The location was great & it was one of the best beach vacations I've ever had!
Good hotel.
Decent rooms with deck and good sunrise ocean views. Recommend bike rental from hotel for ride along ocean path just off hotel grounds. Helpful staff.
Nice Clean Hotel That's A Bargain
Clean, reasonably priced, balcony, and a great view of the Ocean and boardwalk. When I first drove up to this hotel, I thought I had made a misjudgement. The hotel is more like a motel, meaning the rooms open to the street and it looks sort of old. Even my two teenagers were like, MOM ARE WE STAYING HERE? Thank goodness we went in anyway. The rooms were large and the access to and view of the ocean were excellent. The rooms were also clean, came with a refrigerator and microwave. A CVS pharmacy, McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King, etc. were all within blocks and there's a Dairy Queen right on the beach about 4 to 6 blocks down. The beds were comfortable and the table in the room was adequate enough for us to eat dinner on. We loved sitting out on the balcony and watching the waves roll in. We were right on the boardwork so we also got to people gaze. For the price you're charged for the room, you can't go wrong. It's a huge bargain. We definitely would go back and stay here. The only down side is the free breakfast. They serve packaged Sarah Lee Bagels and Pastries and two choices of a cereal so breakfast wasn't the best. I would suggest that they buy local pastries and that should correct the problem. Otherwise, definitely stay here. For what you're saving in hotel costs, you can buy a really nice, hot breakfast elsewhere.
Jewel on Virginia Beach
This is the secound time in five years we have spent a week at this Econo Lodge. It is conveniently located, well maintained, and has friendly helpful staff. The location provides for great ocean and sky viewing, bring you binoculars. The 3 mile long board walk is excellent and is well maintained, bring your walking or running shoes. Also noticed that the boardwalk, beach, streets and hotels are well patrolled and gives you a good safe environment to vacation in. The Econo Lodge provides all the nice extras with out being over done. There are a lot of attractions, shopping is good and a good variety of places to dine out, in the area. After you have done the big attractions talk to the locals for advice. They will let you now how to get around and find those out of way gems in the area.
Wonderful place to stay
A wonderful place to stay. Every morning we would hear dolphins performing a show for us. staff, houskeeping, and maintenece were a pleasure, great continental breakfast (free). The best part of our stay was the terrific view from our balcony. I would highly recomend this hotel to anyone coming to Virginia Beach.
Excellant Place to Stay!!!!
We try to stay at the Econo Lodge on the Ocean every time we go to the beach, because the entire staff are so pleasant to deal with. We just stayed there 3 weeks ago and were treated wonderful as usual. We enjoy riding the (free) Bikes each day, and they always give us the floor that we request. One stay we had an emergency and had to leave before our reserv. was up and they did not charge anything extra. We travel alot and this is our favorite Motel out of all the places we stay, you can depend on it being clean each and every time.
"Wonderful Place to Stay"
Small, quiet hotel with wonderful ocean views. The staff; front desk, maintainence, and housekeeping, were very courteous, friendly, and accomodating. Our room was spacious and extremely clean. We enjoyed the pool, as well as the free bike rentals. We highly recommend this motel and will definitely stay there again.
Really Nice Place to Stay
I was just there this weekend. Small hotel, but large on staff courtesy, cleanliness and value. I wanted to change rooms from a lower to higher level and staff were extremely courteous in accommodating my request. Rooms were very clean and included small refrigerators, microwave, coffeemaker, including coffee, and even a small safe if you felt the need to use it. I would definitely stay here again.
Very nice
A small, quiet hotel. First time in VA beach and we took a chance. Good price, comfortable rooms, and great pool. Our favorite part was the terrific view from our balcony.
A lovely place to stay!
A lovely small motel on the beach! Clean, friendly staff, nice outdoor pool. We are booking another vacation there this year.
